| Sylvaroth03-04-07, 10:53 AM | Is it possible to deliver a touch attack with a weapon? Something like storing the charge of a spell inside of a sword, discharging on a successful attack? |
| 1hitparry03-04-07, 11:10 AM | If the spell is third level or lower, you could always get a spell storing sword (always good for Scorching Ray or Ray of Enfeeblement). Either way, though, you can't deliver the spell as a touch attack, you have to make a regular attack with the weapon. |
| Mastel03-04-07, 11:23 AM | dagger spell mage can do it. |
| Sylvaroth03-04-07, 11:50 AM | Which makes me think a magic weapon special ability or a feat could do the same thing. Any suggestions? |
| Wind of Darkness03-04-07, 12:15 PM | Without a spell-storing weapon, I don't think you can do it, no. |
| HellflameArcanite03-04-07, 12:28 PM | I think that several PrCs have abilities similar to this, but as with the spell storing sword, it may be a normal melee attack, not a touch. I know of one for sure: the Enlightened Fist in Complete Arcane. |
| Adam Smite03-04-07, 12:38 PM | I think either Spellsword or Duskblade get's spell channeling or something like that, but I'm also pretty sure it allowed you to channel more than just touch spells. |
| Sylvaroth03-04-07, 12:49 PM | Without a spell-storing weapon, I don't think you can do it, no. If you meant, 'there is no way in the core rules or any splat book I know, to deliver a touch attack with a weapon.' Thank you very much! If you meant, however, 'there is no way in the core rules or any splat book I know, to deliver a touch attack with a weapon, so obviously you can't do it.' That's wrong! If I am the DM, I can do almost everything I want, period. Just because you could not make an attack while jumping off your mount's back without inventing a house rule, did not prevent WotC to create skill tricks, did it? |
| Sylvaroth03-04-07, 01:39 PM | Suggestion: Arcane Channeling [General] Prerequisites: Proficiency with selected weapon, Weapon Focus with selected weapon, caster level 5th. Benefit: You can channel any touch spell you know into your melee weapon and deliver the spell through your weapon with a melee attack. The channeling requires the same action that the casting of the spell would, it provokes attacks of opportunity, and uses up the prepared spell or spell slot just as if you had cast the spell. As long as you wield the weapon, you can hold the charge and touch friends with your weapon (as described in the PHB, p. 141, holding the charge). Depending on the description of the spell, the channeled spell affects the next targets you successfully attack or touch with your weapon (saving throws and spell resistance still apply). If you succeed in a melee attack, the attack deals damage normally; then the effect of the spell is resolved. After you attacked or touched the designated number of targets (as determined by the spell's description) the spell discharges from the weapon, and it can then hold another spell. |

This feat would be VERY good. It's essentially equivalent to a quickened spell every battle. Why would anyone ever make a spellsword with this feat around? I would put spell level and uses per day limits on the feat or make it a metamagic feat that increases the level by 1 or more. |

| Coridan03-04-07, 07:13 PM | Duskblades can do it (Player's Handbook 2) |
| Empiro03-04-07, 08:42 PM | Duskblades can do it (Player's Handbook 2) Yes, but Duskblades have a fairly weak spell list. Here, you'd be able to use it for any Fighter/Wizard combo. When I said essentially quickened spell, I mean that you can put it into your sword before battle, and channel it on an enemy during battle as part of attacking. So no AOOs would be drawn there. Even if AOOs were drawn, I can't remember the last time my casters ever failed a defensive concentration check, because of items like Tunics of Steady Spellcasting (+5 concentration). |
| Lafing Cat03-04-07, 11:59 PM | Smiting Spell is a metamagic Feat from somewhere (I forget where) that allows just this, the spell to be delivered along with a melee attack. I believe its a +1 level adjustment, might be a +2. |

So no AOOs would be drawn there. Same with spell charged touch attacks (which are considered armed touch attacks and don't provoke AoOs, too), so why is that a problem? The only advantage is, that your attack deals your weapons damage AND discharges the spell, instead of just discharging the spell and I think that's hardly too good for a feat (in the end, there is another feat -Improved Unarmed Strike (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/feats.htm#improvedUnarmedStrike)- that enables you to deliver a touch spell with an unarmed strike, and to deal lethal damage with your armed unarmed attack without provoking AoOs). A feat with a level adjustment? |
| Lafing Cat03-06-07, 03:27 AM | A feat with a level adjustment? It's a metamagic feat, the level adjustment refers to how much higher the slot the spell must take up is. I probably could have been clearer, but I thought mentioning it was metamagic was sufficient. |
| Empiro03-06-07, 03:33 AM | Same with spell charged touch attacks (which are considered armed touch attacks and don't provoke AoOs, too), so why is that a problem? Because normally, if you did this, you really didn't gain anything compared with just casting the spell in the first round, moving to your enemy, and delivering the spell. Being able to do full weapon damage in addition to spell damage is not a minor ability. Improved unarmed strike lets you do 1d3 + strength, which isn't exactly in the same league as your +1 cold iron, holy, wounding greatsword. Sure monks can use it to great effect, but there aren't that many PrCs that are Monk/caster hybrids other than the Enlightened Fist and Sacred Fist, both of which are somewhat balanced by not gaining full spellcasting, and because their unarmed damage will always lag behind a pure monk's. Smiting Spell appears in the PHB2 with the added limitation that you must use the spell in 1 minute or lose it. It also increases the spell level by 1. Seems pretty fair to me. |
| Sylvaroth03-06-07, 12:55 PM | That's why I said it could be a feat, or a weapon special ability (I think a combination of both would not be that far off). A weapon special ability that lets you store touch spells inside of your weapon, but you can only use that ability if you took the appropriate feat. I agree that dealing damage equal to 1d3 + strength is not the same league as the damage you deal with a '+1 cold iron, holy, wounding greatsword', but I still think it could be done. I don't think, however, it should warrant an increase in the touch spell's spell level. |
| Sylvaroth03-09-07, 06:48 PM | The Clawed Spell metamagic feat from Dragon #315 requires to have the Ka-tainted template (LA+3) and Weapon Focus (touch). This feat creates a claw-shaped force effect around your hands (enabling you to damage incorporeal creatures which are denied the normal 50% chance to ignore the damage from a spell cast by a corporeal spellcaster) and lets you deal +1d6 points of additional damage for every five caster levels you possess. Clawed Spell does have an LA of +1. Is the feat I posted that more powerful? I mean, even at LA+1, this feat lets you deal an average of 14 points of extra damage, and grants your touch attack the equivalent of the ghost touch weapon special ability. |

| mvincent03-12-07, 04:14 PM | If the spell is third level or lower, you could always get a spell storing sword (always good for Scorching Ray or Ray of Enfeeblement). Two errors here: 1) Spell-storing (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/magicWeapons.htm#spellStoring) can only activate when "the weapon strikes a creature and the creature takes damage from it" 2) A spell-storing weapon can only store a "targeted" spell, and ray spells are not actually considered targeted spells in D&D. Scorching Ray or Ray of Enfeeblement cannot be stored in a spell-storing weapon. |
| Jam_Warrior03-13-07, 04:36 AM | Don't touch attack spells get discharged when you attack whether you hit or not? The same should surely apply to this weapon based method, thus giving it a suitable drawback compared to spellstoring. |
| tarkin03-13-07, 12:03 PM | Jam War. your information is wrong. If you use a touch attack spell, then you MUST hit to discharge the spell. If you are attempting to do a melee attack, if you then miss the melee attack but hit a touch attack, then you do not activate the touch attack spell. |

I don't mean discharge the spell as in activate it, I mean discharge the spell as in lose the charge. i.e. You cast shocking grasp, you try to touch somone and miss, no damage is caused and the spell charge is lost. Is that not right? |
