| Poisonelf06-25-05, 06:06 PM | A mage casts the Mage Armor spell on a Fighter with Full Plate Armor and a +1 Dex Bonus. What is the Fighter's Armor Class? (In other words, does the Mage Armor spell effect stack with the Fighter's other AC mods?) |
| Seeker9506-25-05, 06:14 PM | His armor class is the same as it was before the wizard cast mage armor. |
| Poisonelf06-25-05, 06:24 PM | With the understanding up front that Armor Bonuses don't stack, the PHB 3.5 definition of Armor Bonus States: "Magic Armor typically grants an enhancement bonus to the Armor's Armor Bonus (not the character's herself...), which has the effect of increasing the Armor's Overall Bonus (Leather is +3, thus its overall bonus would increase to +7 [+3 + +4 = +7])." Is this not correct, given the terminology of the definition? |
| Nuntius12806-25-05, 06:31 PM | Mage Armor grants an armor bonus to AC. That's the same kind that armor grants(go figure), so they don't stack. |
| Illithid Tentacles06-25-05, 06:48 PM | Mage Armor provides an Armor bonus. So does Mage Armor. Like bonuses don't stack, with the exception of Dodge bonuses, which stack with each other, and unnamed bonuses, which stack with everything, including each other. If you're wearing Leather armor (+2 Armor bonus to AC) and someone casts a Mage Armor spell on you, then your AC goes up a total of two points -the 4 point Armor bonus from Mage Armor supercedes the 2 points from your Leather armor. If you're wearing Chain Mail (+5 to AC) and someone casts Mage Armor on you, then your AC stays exactly the same since the +5 from your Chain Mail supercedes the bonus from Mage Armor. If you take off your Chain Mail, or it's lost, or damaged to the point of uselessness, then your AC will only go down a total of 1 point, until the Mage Armor spell wears off. Mage Armor targets "Creature touched," NOT "Armor touched." If it increased your armor's AC bonus by 4 points, then it would provide an Enchantment bonus, not an Armor bonus, and have a range of "Touch", and a Target/Area of Effect of "One suit of armor or clothes". Regardless of all semantics, like bonuses (again, excepting unnamed and Dodge bonuses) DO NOT STACK. The higher one take precedence over the lower. |

Is this not correct, given the terminology of the definition? There's a huge difference between mage armor and magic armor. |
| Merestil Haye06-25-05, 10:49 PM | The armour bonus granted by Mage Armour does not stack with the armour bonus granted by equipment, because they are the same kind of bonus and affect the same thing - the armour wearer. Although it might seem pointless to cast Mage Armour on a full-plate clad fighter, there is one circumstance when it may prove useful - when under attack by incorporeal creaturs who make incorporeal touch attacks. Why? Because Mage Armour provides its full bonus against incorporeal touch attacks. So, your full-plate clad fighter with 13 Dex, who would normally have AC 11 vs that shadow, gets AC 15 instead. Might make a lot of difference to him. |
| Nom06-25-05, 11:21 PM | In contrast, the clerical magic vestments spell provides an enhancement bonus to the armour. This does increase the armour's bonus. Of course, this is the same type as a permanent magic bonus to the armour so won't stack with +1 plate. |
| Leaf_Mage2206-26-05, 11:59 AM | The way I see it Mage armor is one of the only mage's way to protect himself through magic without having to wear heavy armor with penalties. The mage armor forms a protective barrier of magic, its a wearable shield. It will block attacks and objects just as any other armor would, its a +4 to yourself. However the armor has a time limit, and it can be dispelled so it has its weaknesses. Mage armor is just a magical armor bonus, if applied to regular armor it will grant its bonus and act as a second skin, a second armor for as long as it lasts. Well that's how I feel about it...........LOL |
