| RandomQuestions10-28-07, 03:36 AM | Various people I play with have always given me different answers about whether these stack. Do they, and whereabouts does it say they do? I scanned the DMG and PHB but didn't catch anything. I'm still somewhat new to D&D, so I might not have known what to look for, but both an answer and where it appears in the books would be helpful. Thanks!:D |

Thanks!:D Nothing ever stacks except Dodge bonuses, circumstance bonuses that come from different circumstances, and specifically untyped bonuses (these are very rare.) With that in mind, examine each type (dodge, armour, shield) and locate your largest value in each type. That is what that type will contribute to your total AC. |

Thanks!:D Armor, Shield, Base NA + Enhancement NA (it enhances the base, humans start with +0 base), Dodge, Insight, Circumstance, profane/Sacred, and untyped. Example Full plate + Mage armor do not stack: both are armor bonuses. Mage armor does boost incorporeal touch AC (like a wraith) because Force though. A Kobold has 1 NA and wears a amulet of NA +3: has 4 NA to AC because it enhances his base NA. Dodge bonuses are rare: few things givethem, Haste, Prc Loremaster, etc. Insight: Dusty Rose Ioun stone gives that. Foundation of Stone spell gives +2 untyped AC when not moving that round. |
| Merestil Haye10-28-07, 12:18 PM | The rule Stacking In most cases, modifiers to a given check or roll stack (combine for a cumulative effect) if they come from different sources and have different types (or no type at all), but do not stack if they have the same type or come from the same source (such as the same spell cast twice in succession). If the modifiers to a particular roll do not stack, only the best bonus and worst penalty applies. Dodge bonuses and circumstance bonuses however, do stack with one another unless otherwise specified.Every time you have a stacking bonus question, apply that rule. |

If that's the case this sticky might need to be changed, as it says shield and armor bonuses stack. http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=227006 Look under magic items It is not saying that armor bonuses will stack with armor bonuses, and shield bonuses will stack with shield bonuses. It is saying that an armor bonus will stack with a shield bonus (because they are different types). |
