Sorry if this has been done already (Unless I'm just not seeing it, I couldn't find a "forum search" tool):

I'm planning in the not too distant future running a "Night-of-the-Living-D&D"-style campaign, where the PCs have to stop an evil lich sorceress from bathing the campaign world in undead. (cliche, I know, but still fun.) I had built her as a Drow 13th Necromancer/5th Archmage, before stumbling on a certain artifact book (again one that is woefully overused, but I can at least change the name of) that give the villainess a major number of buffs, including being able to cast a number of summoning spells and Gate as spell-like abilities.

Problem: I had set her prohibited schools as Transmutation and Conjuration, which pretty much forbids her the use of those spells, either learned or as read from scrolls. Being as those powers are being granted from this artifact, should she have use of them, or should school restrictions trump even the most mighty and dread of artifacts?

What are the requirements for using the Artifact? If it's being a Spellcaster, she can. If it's having those spells on your class spell list, she can't. Would a Beguiler be able to use it?

Prohibited school basically means the spell is not on your spell list.

That means that you can still use magic items with the spell, but only if a fighter with no ranks in UMD could use the magic item.

For example, even if you have Illusion as a forbidden school, you can use:

Potion of Disguise Self.
Ring of Invisibility
or even a ring of Spell Storing with (Invisibility) in it.

But you can not use:

Wand of Invisibility
Scroll of Invisibility
Staff of Invisibility.

-----------------

Treat your Necromancer as a fighter for purposes of determining whether he can can use that power of the artifact.

If a fighter could use it, then he could.

As far as I can tell, it grants the abilities to any non-Good reader, so long as they possess the book.

Then she can use it just fine.
