| Ancient History06-20-06, 10:43 AM | In the Forgotten Realms setting exists a group of minor artifacts known as mythallars. Anyone within range of a mythallar can, with the proper materials, craft magic items without using XP. Such magic items only work within the bounds of a mythallar, and are generally known as quasi-magic items. Artificers, in the Eberron setting, are the preeminent creators of magic items, although they cannot cast spells. So, in your campaign, if there exists a city with a working mythallar and a group of artificers...what would they create? How nuts would they go? |
| SoldierOfFortune18706-20-06, 11:32 AM | It would likely be the most luxurious city in the land, as all of its runnings could be equated to its magical 'technology.' It would also make the surrounding kingdoms jealous, and seek to remove and/or destroy the artifacts for personal gain. |
| Slivvy Gaidin06-20-06, 11:36 AM | I imagine the group of artificers who controlled the mythalllar would guard it jealously, and try to stamp out any outside knowledge of its existence (like the area 51 type conspiracy theories) They'd keep the insanely awesome power to themselves, and attempt to subersively control nations through its use. |
| camble06-20-06, 01:10 PM | There seems to be something like that already look at Sharn and its manifest zone there are magical items that can only exist in side the manifest zone Such as the flying buttress, soarsleds and skycoachs. I imagine the price would be reduced since the item can only be used within the manifest zone. |
| Secrets Untold06-20-06, 02:00 PM | They'd each make their own mythalars and keep them around. Or they'd implant mythalars into their creations so they always are active. |
| katarl06-20-06, 02:45 PM | Well, since mythallars are epic magic (rare epic magic at that), and eberron does not actually have any epic level wizards, it would be very unlikely to happen. If it did, though, the 21st+ wizard controlling the place would be more than enough insurance to stop any jealous. They'd go pretty nuts, even more so than the netherese did. They'd create as many items as they had gold for, which, since an epic level wizard created it all, could be quite a lot. edit- wait a minute, no xp cost- you could make scrolls of wish like 9th level candy! |
| Jaid06-20-06, 07:12 PM | better yet: 1) make item 2) suck XP out of the item, add to craft reserve 3) make into new item, usable anywhere =D i presume this should work, anyways... it doesn't say you gain as much XP as the person making the item lost, just that you gain the amount of XP appropriate to the item. of course, any sane DM would houserule that away before a PC gets a chance to use it, but i believe it should work, as written... |
| Ancient History06-20-06, 07:45 PM | Well, imagine a city where the artificers made literal armies of constructs to defend themselves from their enemies and observe menial labor. Then, if any of those constructs awaken...a revolt. |

But you can only drain a magic item, not a quasi-magic item. Of course, that depends on the wording of the mythallar. |
