I mentioned this spell in another thread and have reworked it up again. In its Second Edition format it was an Illusion/Transformation spell. Even though basic 3.5 does not account for dual school spells, some of the latest rulebooks do make allowance for it again. Therefore, it still is Ill/Trans.

As You Were
Illusion/Transmutation
Level: Sor/Wiz 8
Components: V,S,M
Casting Time: 1 round
Range: Touch
Target: Self
Duration: Permanant
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: No

This spell causes any caster who has undergone permanant transformations, such as becoming a lich, to appear as they did prior to that event. The spell causes subject to look exactly as they did prior to their transformation. Minor, natural changes are allowed at will, so the subject can change the length of his hair or the tone of his skin (from pale to suntanned and back for example), sweating, etc., to further enhance his natural seeming appearance. In addition, the spells has tactile elements as well. The subject will feel as they did before, to include skin texture, muscle tone, body heat, pulse, etc.

The subject of the spell may suppress it at will, reverting to their true form, a lich appearing to shrivel into a withered corpse. (The DM may require a test vs. fear for those viewing this transformation, the affects based on the viewer's level).

The spell does not suppress any touch based attacks or auras. A lich under the effect of this spell can still paralyze with a touch as usual.

Polymorphs and other like changes still affect the subject as usual, temporarily superceding As You Were, which will resume when the other spells expire.

This spell can be dispelled as per other permanant spells.

Material Component: 1,000 GP ground jade

I think a much higher material cost should be needed. Probably an experience penalty is needed.

And what about lycanthropes? Vampires? All of these could be classified as "casters that have undergone permanent transformations". How are their special abilities treated under the effect of this spell?

Lycanthropes wouldn't qualify. The signs in the human form as slight and since they can change to and from their animal form, that isn't a permanant transformation is applied to this spell. Vampires could qualify, however, since they do have a permanant marked change in their physical appearance.

So, "permanant transformation" should apply to physical appearance.

Special abilities are unaffected, unless they are based on appearance. If a subject's fear projection was based on its horrific appearance, it would have to drop the spell to use it. A lich would not have to drop the spell to use its paralyzing touch. Using this as a guideline, the DM may decide.

Raising the materials cost might make sense. An XP penatly, I'm not so sure about. One way around that, if anyone wants to use this spell in their game, would be to lower the level and give it a limited duration, maybe 1 hour per level. A caster could then make it permanant with the permanancy spell if they so chose.

make it so it can be MADE permanent. not already. drop the level by 2, and then give it an XP cost to make it permanent through the permanancy spell

OK, here are some alternative stats.

Illusion/Transformation
Level: Sorc/Wiz 5
Components: V,S,M
Casting Time: 1 Round
Range: Touch
Target: Self
Duration: 10 minutes/level
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: No

Description remains the same.

Can be made permanant with Permanancy:
Minimum Caster Level: 13
XP Cost: 2,500 (3,000 to include Familiar)

The extra cost will make the spell permanant for the familiar so it will not be limited to the 5 foot rule.
