I wanted to design a spell specifically for the Spirit Shaman (Complete Divine), which would allow the character to take on the form of her Spirit Guide. This change should be cosmetic rather than changing stats or abilities, for the greatest part, mostly designed to reflect a deeper union of the Spirit Shaman with her guide.

The spell is based on Aspect of the Wolf (Spell Compendium), which is 1st level. Aspect of the Wolf gives special attacks and stat increases, which this spell does not give. To balance that, I circumvent the usual "equipment melds into your form and becomes nonfunctional" rule. This would make it perhaps a bit like Change Self, but still a Transmutation, hiding the equipement. It would not be as versatile as Change Self, as there is only one form that can be adopted. Both Aspect of the Wolf and Change Self are first level spells, so I believe that might be a good start to set this spell at.

Please critique, and thanks in advance for any replies! :)

Aspect of the Spirit Guide
Transmutation
Level: Spirit Shaman 1
Components: V,S
Casting Time: 1 Standard Action
Range: Personal
Target: You
Duration: 10 minutes/level (D)

When you cast this spell, you assume the physical appearance of your spirit guide form, as long as it is a land-bound animal. While under the effect of this spell, your creature type changes to fey, and your size changes to medium. You gain low-light vision and scent, as well as a single natural attack appropriate to the animal, which deals 1d6+1 points of damage with each successful hit; you may not wield weapons in your new form.

Your class and level, hit points, alignment, base attack bonus, base saving throws, stats, extraordinary, supernatural and spell-like abilities and attacks all remain the same. You cannot speak or cast spells while in spirit guide form. However, if you have the Natural Spell feat, you can cast spells normally. Your equipment melds into your new form, but stays functional.

You do not gain any specific movement modes or special abilities of your new form. An eagle could not fly, and a shark could not breathe underwater. You lose all abilities relying on a body part that you do not have in spirit guide form. The spirit guide form has always a subtly fey look, making it appear like an mysterious animal of its kind, which could lead moderately capable guards to become suspicious when a caster tries to use this spell for infiltration.

You must have a Spirit Guide to receive any benefit from this spell. Even if a caster is able to share spells with another, or affect another creature despite the range of personal (such as with bracelets of spell-sharing, or multiclassing into a class with a companion creature that has the share spells feature), a creature without a spirit guide cannot benefit from this spell.

As a further question, what would people rule that an item that grants this ability at will would be worth? Around 2,000 gp, in he range of a Headband of Disguise?
