| Regwon10-20-06, 10:53 AM | i couldnt find lowerspell resistance but assay spell resistance seems fine to me. it has a very useful, but very narrow application. its good if your players know that theyre only going to be fighting one type creature that happens to have spell resistance if not then its mediocare at best. and its not an automatic success either. it only gives them a +10 bonus to their caster level check so they could still roll a one. all in all its seems like a reasonable spell. |

However, it only gives a benefit to the caster against a single creature. Lower SR has a saving throw, but it affects a single creature's SR, so that every spellcaster benefits against the target's SR. This works better if there are multiple casters trying to affect the creature. (For example, a party that has a wizard, cleric, bard, and duskblade might be better off if the wizard has Lower SR instead of Assay.) Most high level spellcasters will have Assay Resistance prepared at least once a day. Spontaneous caster's might not bother with such a situation specific spell, but wizards and clerics will often use it. Note thought that as a 4th lvl spell its competing with some realy good cleric spells (Death Ward and Freedom of Movement come right to mind.) So ya, its a good spell, but there is of course a trade off in that the wizard can't prepare another Enervation spell or the Cleric can't prepare a second Death Ward. Its a very good spell to have on a scroll though. |

And that it works only on a single creature is no drawback. By the time you fight against multiple creatures at once you are so high that their SR isn't much of a problem anymore. |

| Bopple10-21-06, 09:39 PM | #1. Lower Spell Resistance(Draconomicon) Wiz4/Clr4 #2. Then Spell Vulnerability(Planar Handbook) - identical to #1, except Wiz3/Clr4 #3. Spell Vulnerability(Spell Compendium) - identical to #2, except it no longer penalize target's saving throw but casting time is still 1 round. #4. Release order: Draconomicon -> Planar Handbook -> Spell Compendium Sum) 1. Lower Resistance is probably replaced by Spell Vulnerability. 2. Spell Vulnerability is nerfed and almost useless. |

There is no automatic failure with caster level checks. And with a bonus of +10 you are guranteed to beat the SR of any equal CR creature even if you roll a 1. The only exceptions are mind flayers which require you to roll a 6. |
