| mark197503-10-08, 07:58 PM | I have a problem with my DM over the Assay Spell Resistance spell in Spell Compendium. He thinks that the Casting time : swift action is a mistake and it should be like that even when i show him the Spell Compendium Errata. Anyone else having this problem? Also the Spell doesnt name the +10 bonus you get from the spell so im assuming its "unnamed". So does that mean it stacks with consecutive casting of the spell if all targeted on the same creature? Ran into a lev 11 Sorc Rahkshasa. Had somewthing like 39 SR. So i wanted to cast 2 Assay resistances and the DM said no because it doesnt stack. Any suggestions or info would be appreciated. Thanks |

Rakshasha with 11 sorcerer levels? That's an SR of 38... But that's also an 18th level spellcaster, CR 21. If you are fighting that, you should have means of getting around spell resistance (Orb spells, whatnot). 3.) Unnamed bonuses from the same source [e.g. the same spell] do not stack. -- Gecko |

He thinks that the Casting time : swift action is a mistake and it should be like that even when i show him the Spell Compendium Errata. Anyone else having this problem? Nope, because it's a Swift action. Show the DM the spell True Casting, which is a 1st level spell that gives a +10 to the SR check for one spell, and is a standard action. It's essentially the non-Quickened version of Assay Spell Resistance, but it trades multiple rounds of effect for the possibility of affecting multiple targets, which is approximately an equal trade (it's best to have both spells at your command, one for multi-target spells, one for single-target spells). Assay Spell Resistance being a Swift action spell is actually a slight drawback since you can't choose to cast it as a Standard action if that would be beneficial to you. That is, unless you don't have the Quicken Spell feat; but what high level mage doesn't have Quicken Spell? Also the Spell doesnt name the +10 bonus you get from the spell so im assuming its "unnamed". So does that mean it stacks with consecutive casting of the spell if all targeted on the same creature? It is an untyped/unnamed bonus, but effects from the same source (or a separate identical source of the same name) never stack. Thanks You're welcome :) |
