| Ketone08-23-07, 03:23 AM | Can someone please help me? I'm not sure if I understand this spell correctly, and if it works the way I think it does, I have a couple questions. When you cast the spell, it takes you and your friends to the astral plane as spirits. You can then manifest new physical bodies on any other plane, equipment and all. This is a great spell, if I got that right. 1. Do you get to cast spells with your new form? Do you get all new spells per day, or do you subtract from your normal total? 2. If you cast a spell with a material component, does it get consumed on your real body as well? |
| tarkin08-23-07, 11:24 AM | Yes this spell is fantastic. It is usually better than a Wish, because you don't pay XP. 1. You can cast spells, it you do get new spells each day. 2. Yes, the material component gets consumed. |
| Ketone08-23-07, 06:00 PM | So, does the new physical body have it's own spells? Or does it subtract from my real spells? |
| redraven08-23-07, 10:31 PM | 2. Yes, the material component gets consumed. Where are you getting this ruling from? House rules? Astral Projection states quite clearly that: The spell projects an astral copy of you and all you wear or carry onto the Astral Plane. Since the Astral Plane touches upon other planes, you can travel astrally to any of these other planes as you will. To enter one, you leave the Astral Plane, forming a new physical body (and equipment) on the plane of existence you have chosen to enter. In other words, whatever components you consume while Astrally Projected has zero affect on your body in suspended animation. Astral Projection quite simply duplicates all your equipment. And even better, if you travel to another plane, then your duplicated equipment is permanent. Astral Projection essentially reads: "Multiple material wealth x2, free reset button for any encounter." Absurdly broken, but it is RAW. |

It's fixed by the simple and nearly universal houserule: If the projection and the original body are ever on the same plane, the original body wakes up and the projection vanishes (along with all of its equipment). It's so universal and not-really-a-houserule a houserule that MotP *assumes* it when it talks about the Astral Plane. |
| Ketone08-24-07, 01:16 AM | well, then you could just plane shift to the ethereal plane, then use astral projection to get to the material plane and do the quest. The ethereal plane is not all that dangerous. |

The ethereal plane is not all that dangerous. Yeah, between ghosts, ethergaunts, dharculi, ethereal marauders, possessing fiends, and every blundering idiot that walks through an ethereal curtain, the Ethereal Plane is a perfect place to fall unconscious for long periods of time while bedecked with valuable magic items. |
| tarkin08-24-07, 12:51 PM | Typically you need to build a fortress/vault of some kind to protect your body no matter WHAT plane you start from. |
| Ketone08-25-07, 02:16 PM | Oh well, I don't see much of a problem with doubling your items and such, because at the level you're using astral projection, enemy spellcaster might also be using mordenkainen's disjunction, or as I like to call it: mordenkainen's horrible rape of your character wealth. |
