Tons of creatures have spell-like abilities "at will". Does that mean they can do it as a free action (as much as they want on a given turn), a swift action (once per turn, but doesn't take an action) or the regular casting time?

Thnxs for any answers.

Spell-like abilities require a standard action to activate. Non-spell-likes would vary, but I would assume a standard action unless otherwise noted.

The regular casting time of the spell, typically one standard action, or/unless quickened with the application of the Quicken Spell-like Ability feat. Quite.

At will just means they can do it once per round for as many rounds they are awake per day.

For example:

At Will - Invisibility.

What kind of action does that take? Or for an item?

Ring of Invisibility- Invisibility at will.

That's (slightly) different, it's not a spell-like ability but a spell being activated from an item.

Activating from items is always a minimum of a standard action.

Activating a SLA is a standard action(can be a swift action if modified with the quicken SLA feat). At will means you can use it as many times as you want, but it still takes a standard action to activate the SLA each time. :)

Usually, this restricts you to a maximum of 1 SLA/round. Though some monsters may have special abilities that allow them to overcomet this limitation.
