| Taeldrin Laesrash01-31-06, 10:18 PM | This little speech was given by a wizard character of mine when he had to give a lecture at a magical university. It's my own thoughts on magic's base and quantam physics. I was partially inspiried by the Physique Atomique (http://www.mimir.net/essays/planarphysics.html) at Mimir.net. Magic and nature. Somebody tell me the first thing that comes to mind when I say those two words. For me, it’s a druid, a mage who slings spells in the name of the natural world. Their magic greatly consists of effects that alter plants or animals, or creates and destroys such things. That, however, is merely a cantrip in the connection or simulation of magic and nature. Some graybeards study a thing called Atomic Theory. It is the proposal that you, I, and everything else in the planes is made of particles so small a fleck of dust houses a trillion of them. Some theories go on to say that there are elemental properties attuned to each particle, and they group together to form everything. Got that? Good. It gets more complicated. Less common essays, such as one I once wrote, go on to detail colloraries of this theory, saying that when positive or negative spin is applied to one of these particles, they become quasi-elemental, forming such parts of the Inner Planes like Ash, Smoke, or Ice. As I once wrote, ‘If spin makes quasi-elemental particles, then what is positive or negative energy?’ Further research detailed that positive and negative spin comes from waves of energy. Those waves are made of void particles. That is to say, stuff that exists but isn’t there. These particle’s-well-mere presence shifts the particles out of balance, and depending on the spin they’re given, they begin to become lighter and lighter, thinning out matter nearby, while negative spun-particles gain mass to the point that even energy is drawn to it. However, I’ve gotten off-topic. What I want to focus on is the energy before it gives matter its spin. These ‘void particles’ are composed of energy that is not elemental or spun at all. Theoretically, Boccob’s Disk of Concordant Opposition is made up of this stuff. When it interacts with matter, it can, as I’ve said, give it a positive or negative spin. But in theory, the void particles could become any kind of particle or energy. It can be influenced by other sources of power, whether it is aided by other beings, or altered by alternative sources of power (Using the Word, for instance). So wizards seek to master one of these alternative energy sources, so they can manipulate the void particles. The Word, a primordial language created by ancient beings, is the most common used source, practically the default method. It is my theory that all mages gain a minor influence over it. Divine magic users, like the clerics of the powers or other forces, use the droplets of divine energy provided by their source of power. Sorcerers have an inborn knowledge of the Word, passed on by a great ancestor. Where do these void particles come from? The Source, I think. They are part of the natural world. Actually, they are the natural world. Metamagic, or the alteration of spells, is the concentration of void particles. Certain configurations of these particles provide components to how a magical effect acts out, much like the numbers in a mathematical equation. When these clusters are given the magical kick-start, they’ll act up, and the ‘equation’ is fulfilled. However, this ends up utilizing more energy than the spell would normally use. I’ll get into this now. Why can’t a mage do this all day, you ask? Because the action is incredibly draining upon the caster, for wizards at least. The Word can have a nasty backlash effect on the soul, although that’s just a wild guess of mine. Other sources of magic, like a cleric’s divine energy, are simply used up like fuel, or otherwise simply given a limit by that which provides the magic. |

"Magic" is a type of natural energy related to Electromagnatism that is manipulatable by the the mind to effect reality and that is also related to "Lifeforce"(souls/Spirits) and the animating motion of Matter in Space/Time/Reality and has a frequency of about 27 Mghz. (the same Frequency that the Brain generates for Psionic type effects when altering reality via force of Mind over Matter or to contact/breech another Mind) Besides Mages/Sorcerers using Mind and Will to Manipulate Reality via "Magic" there is Technology that can either harnest "Magic" as a unlimited Cosmic Power Source to power mechanical motion and circutry known as "spell circuts" to manipulate the energy into effects on reality (ironically the "spell circuts" look a lot like the pieced together Symbols that Mages must memorize and may even be made out of the same type of materials/catalyst as the reagents used by Wizards). Technological Spell Casting Devices would use a input device to create and effect but instead of it appearing on a computer monitor it would appear in the nearby reality though the device might have a monitor to help in aiding, say, targeting a Monster 20 feet away for the fireball the "techno-FireWand" is about to unleash via it's "MON_ZU+B3KA" programing  (This "Techno-Magic" would upsurp the saying about Science giving us Technology to harness the laws of Nature, "Magic" let's us Break them by actually proving "Magic" is actually a part of the laws of Nature...the Foundation of the so called Reality, in this case) In fact in my many Travels there are places where not only was magic undistingishable from Magic, but magic using technology and techology driven by magic was more common then Indoor Plumbing. As for "Divine Magic" the Clerics get their Magic from their godlings(or thier godling's flunkies) who are basically those that can effect and manipulate "Magic" and reality much like Wizards and Sorcerers....in fact their are spells such as "Ibue with Spell ability" that allows Mortal Spellcasters to pass Spells on to their Flunkies....and Lest we forget, getting a Living Elemental Vorticy stuck in your head via symbosys, like the Sorcer Kings of Athas did can allow the granting of Spells to powerful mortals The creatures prefer to be called Polynynomorphs, and the "weird side effect" is from them attempting symbyosys during the Psoinic Enchantment that attracted them to the Champions of Rajjat in the first place...the "free ones" no better then to try to hide in the mind of such creatures nowadays, lest they be stuck until death...like the one that was talking about finally being freed from Kalaak's? mind the last time I cast a "Summon Polynynomorh" spell (these things appear as 4th level Road Gaurds in leather Armor in their free form and one "finger" might apear as 3-6 such gaurds though the base creature is rumored to be a few kilometers long in some alternative reality giving the "Road Gaurds" the "vitality" to stand right back up after looking to be fatally wounded....though some have just "played dead". Don't ask me, the Logic of such a creature is Alien to me as the natural form of the "finger" which is a "void" in time/space in the shape not to unlike a "Black tenticle" spell or a Black Pudding before forming ino a "road Gaurd(s)" ) But I digress As much as I enjoyed reading your Paper, as a fellow Mage, I think you are overthinking the nature of the "art" which can not only be explained Scientifically, but also can be harnessed like any other force in existance by Science and technology. <Fictional PC Signing in Regards> |
