if you have avards menacing tentacles cast on yourself and you shapeshift into a medium sized bird, can you still fly at normal speed.

No such spell exists in the PHB or in the Spell Compendium, so I can't help you.

Do you mean evard's black tentacles? If so, then you cannot. A character affected by the spell is effectively grappled, and needs to make an opposed grapple check as normal to escape the spell.

the spell in question in located in PHB2

it causes two tenticles to sprout from the character and the character can command them to attack for 1d8 damage using player bonus to str and base attack. They also each get an attack of opportunity if presented with one.

I ruled already that since I alloud a shape change prior and the tenticles were still there since they were magical in nature.

The concern was that my player was trying to turn into a medium size flying creature while still having 20 feet worth of tenticles attached. I told him no he couldn't fly while the tenticles were still in effect. Had I not set the presidence earlier allowing him to turn into a wolf and keep the tenticles we wouldn't be having this problem.

My only real problem now is how unbalancing the damn spell is on a druid/tank that he has created.

Is there any updates to the PHB2 that may address this particular spell cause this spell just seems too damn powerful for a lvl 3 spell.

Why wild shape? You can do that with a simple fly spell, something that's also a level 3 spell. Heck, a sorceror can do something similar with a polearm.

Well, he's vulnerable to dispel, and ranged attacks from other creatures (flying creatures have no opportunities for cover). A well-coordinated group will instantly target him with much nastier things than two attacks that deal 1d8 damage. If he doesn't have Combat Reflexes, he only gets one AoO per round. This is a fairly low-power combination for what this character could be doing with his abilities.

You're not pitting the party against orcs armed with only battleaxes, right? All of the NPCs in the DMG are listed with both a melee and a ranged option, so that they can deal with this sort of thing without trouble. I don't see why it's gamebreaking.

It's written in the spell that each tentacle gets an AoO.

Still, this is pretty tame. Call lightning deals more damage than this, and you can accomplish nearly the same effect by readying to hit people on their action.

I never said it was game breaking just frustrating, Yes I can combat everything with dispel magic and or flying creatures they can't hit, it's just I don't want to have to resort to that kinda of thing just to get around that. I need to get away from the Advanced D&D mindset I think thats what keeps holding me back on alot of things lol.
