Awakened animals get 2 HD. What type of HD, animal or magical beast? Also, would making it awakened change it's CR? I'm looking at making a BBEG awakened wolfpack.

Animal HD. Only their type changes to magical beast. Cr could remain unchanged, I suppose.

check the monster manual for "advancing monsters" and increasing their hitdice.

on a side not, a 17th level druid can awaken himself over and over and over and over and... what's his level adjustment, if any?

Eberron lets you awaken magical beasts, IIRC.

And considering that the duration of awaken is instantaneous, does this mean you can keep casting awaken on the same animal over and over again?:D

You wouldn't be able to cast it on an animal more than once and a Druid couldn't cast it on themself.

The target of Awaken is an animal or tree touched.

The type of the animal this is cast on changes to Magical beast (augmented animal) which I would rule as no longer being a valid target for Awaken. I would have to look up and see if there is any errata for the spell since it doesn't say that an awakened tree would get a new type ... I would likely say you *could* cast it multiple times on the same tree, but why would you?

Because the duration is instantaneous, meaning that the mental stat boosts from multiple castings would stack with each other.:P

The tree (an object) would become a plant type, and take on an animated object's template.

It would gain 2hd in magical beast, not animal, as it's type is changed. I say this because a human can't take 2 hd of Elf, nor squirrel. Common sense.

From the SRD
Animal Traits: An animal possesses the following traits (unless otherwise noted in a creature's entry).

Intelligence score of 1 or 2 (no creature with an Intelligence score of 3 or higher can be an animal).

Low-light vision.

-Alignment: Always neutral. Animals are not governed by a human sense of morality.

-Treasure: None. Animals never possess treasure.

Bolding mine. Even though the druid takes on the animal type, he's not an animal, and is not a valid target. Wild shape is a very tricky thing...
