| Raven Dark07-09-05, 01:47 AM | When you cast Awaken on a tree, the tree essentially becomes an Animated Object of the appropriate size with the Plant type, correct? I have some questions about that: The speed, natural slam attack, number of hit dice, natural armor, face/reach, and Strength/Dexterity of an AT (Awkened Tree) are all based off of the Animated Object of the appropriate size, correct? Does the BAB, HD, Saves, and traits, of the AT all match those of a creature with the Plant type or do they remain the same as that of an Animated Object and only the type changes (but not the stats)? If it is the latter, should it gain the augmented subtype? Does the AT gain a Constitution score? If so, what is it? If the type changes to Plant, does the AT keep the Darkvision 60 ft. that all Animated Objects have? What is the movement speed for an AT? An intelligent plant gains skill points, but the animated object stat block has no skills listed. Does this mean that all skills are cross class for an AT? An Awakened Tree or Animal can speak one language that you know, plus one additional language that you know per point of Intelligence bonus (if any). Is that the creature's intelligence bonus or your own? Does the AT gain feats for its Plant HD? I find that the spell doesn't give enough information to actually make these creatures accurately. Can someone help answer these questions? Thanks. Also, if nobody can ascertain the official answers to these questions, would someone please forward these questions to the Sage or other official. My E-mail is down. EDIT: Question #8 has been added. |
| tiercel07-09-05, 02:57 AM | 1. Yes. ("An awakened tree has characteristics as if it were an animated object, except that it gains the plant type and its Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma scores are each 3d6.") 2. As animated object, except that it has the traits of the plant type (but not any other traits, such as characteristic saves). It probably would gain the Augmented subtype, due to its transformation; on the other hand, as far as I know this has no intrinsic game effect. 3. No, because animated objects don't have a Con score, and awaken makes no mention of granting one. 4. Hmmmmmmm. Since the spells says it "gains characteristics as if it were an animated object," I'd say anything specifically in the AO stat block, the tree gets. Construct traits not in the AO stat block would be replaced by plant traits... so darkvision would stay. IMO. 5. A bit tricky... does the "the ability to move its limbs, roots, vines, creepers, and so forth," count as "legs" or even "multiple legs"? I'd probably say speed 30 for most trees, since that matches a treant. 6. I would assume so, until it takes class levels. 7. The languages that it can choose come from your list, but the number it can learn comes from its own Int bonus. |

An awakened plant gains the ability to move its limbs, roots, vines, creepers, and so forth, and it has senses similar to a human’s. As you can see in the SRD, the AT doesn't gain traits of the Plant Type, it gains the Plant type in its entirety. As far as I know, this generally means it gets everything of that type, not just a few traits, doesn't it? |

| Drachasor07-10-05, 06:00 PM | I read that as this: 1. Give the awakened tree all the properties of an animated object of the same size. 2. Change name of the type from Construct to Plant. This would give it the traits, but not the plant hit dice. So it would have: Traits: A plant creature possesses the following traits (unless otherwise noted in a creature’s entry). —Low-light vision. —Immunity to all mind-affecting effects (charms, compulsions, phantasms, patterns, and morale effects). —Immunity to poison, sleep effects, paralysis, polymorph, and stunning. —Not subject to critical hits. —Proficient with its natural weapons only. —Proficient with no armor. —Plants breathe and eat, but do not sleep. instead of Traits: A construct possesses the following traits (unless otherwise noted in a creature’s entry). —No Constitution score. —Low-light vision. —Darkvision out to 60 feet. —Immunity to all mind-affecting effects (charms, compulsions, phantasms, patterns, and morale effects). —Immunity to poison, sleep effects, paralysis, stunning, disease , death effects, and necromancy effects. —Cannot heal damage on their own, but often can be repaired by exposing them to a certain kind of effect (see the creature’s description for details) or through the use of the Craft Construct feat. A construct with the fast healing special quality still benefits from that quality. —Not subject to critical hits, nonlethal damage, ability damage, ability drain, fatigue, exhaustion, or energy drain. —Immunity to any effect that requires a Fortitude save (unless the effect also works on objects, or is harmless). —Not at risk of death from massive damage. Immediately destroyed when reduced to 0 hit points or less. —Since it was never alive, a construct cannot be raised or resurrected. —Because its body is a mass of unliving matter, a construct is hard to destroy. It gains bonus hit points based on size, as shown on the following table. Construct Size Bonus Hit Points Construct Size Bonus Hit Points Fine — Large 30 Diminutive — Huge 40 Tiny — Gargantuan 60 Small 10 Colossal 80 Medium 20 —Proficient with its natural weapons only, unless generally humanoid in form, in which case proficient with any weapon mentioned in its entry. —Proficient with no armor. —Constructs do not eat, sleep, or breathe. Which should mean that it has a constitution score, I think, since the traits change, but the hit dice type don't (so saves and hit die size don't change, for instance). -Drachasor |
