Got a quick question about the spell awaken. The druid in my group is thinking of casting awaken on her animal companion. Once she does it is no longer her companion. Who decides if the companion stays with her? Does it start acquiring class levels? How exactly does this work?

The animal companion loses all of the benefits of being an animal companion, and can become any class. The awakened animal itself decides if it goes with the group or not.

Now, if it only had some way of communicating its decision to the party...:P

Awakened animals gain the ability to speak one language the druid knows plus any bonus languages from having a high Int ... so it wouldn't be too hard unless the party consists of deaf-blind adventurers.

No, I mean as in who gets to control the awakened animal and make its decisions for it...:P

Quite naturally, the DM. The DM controls all things expect the PCs.

You could just ask the DM if you can create a character sheet for the animal, then play it once it's awakened.
