| Rudigrrr10-10-03, 02:38 PM | Can a character have a druid cast awaken on a creature for them, i know awaken makes the animal friendly to the druid and it speaks languages that the druid can speak, but if another character is present and pays the druid, could it work that way????? Rudi |
| PhaedrusXY10-10-03, 02:43 PM | Umm... the druid could cast it for you, but the animal would have no affinity for you at all. It becomes a free-willed intelligent being. Unless you condone slavery, or want to pay it as a henchman, it would have no reason at all to travel with you... unless your DM played it as being friendly to you and ran it as an NPC that decided to travel with your party. Heck, if it was your animal before, and you'd treated it badly, it might even seek revenge against you. If you'd treated it well, and it genuinely had an affection for you, I'd guess it might want to stay with you though. |

| Rudigrrr10-10-03, 03:18 PM | im thinking real simple here, like a dog, or a war trained dog that is awakened for the extra hit dice and the intelligence to run away during battles |
| RhoPhiGamma10-10-03, 03:33 PM | If you're a Ranger, and the animal was your animal companion, I'd say it'd be quite friendly to you after someone else awakens it for you. However, it would no longer be your animal companion, though as TKD said, you could make it a Cohort. Or you might convince your DM to introduce it as a regular NPC that you could try to convince to continue adventuring with you. If it agrees to accompany you, there wouldn't be any "game mechanical" impetus for it to obey you. |
| Seeker9510-10-03, 03:50 PM | People tend to assume that an awakened animal would have the exact same loyalties as the animal had. But think about this... If your IQ jumped fifty or a hundred points, would have studied the same things? Would you have gone to the same college? Would you have taken the same classes? Would you have met the same people? Would you have made the same friends? Now take a situation where the animal, essentially a pet (slave?), gets the initelligence to know it was a pet. Would it want anything to do with the master? I do not know the answers to these questions, but I do assume they would vary from awakened animal to awakened animal, and from situation to situation. As DM, I would treat each awakened animal as an NPC. Further, I would rule (probabaly roll) to see whether the awakened animal went on its own way, stayed, or maybe even acted against the party. |
| Rudigrrr10-10-03, 03:53 PM | then what could i do to have like a dog that doesnt die right away, aside from making it a cohort or animal companion or anything like that??? or to purchase and advanced dog... where could i find info on that??? rudi |
| Seeker9510-10-03, 07:17 PM | The same way you keep your horse from dying every day. Be careful. Or buy a war dog instead. In any case, a few points in animal handling is probably necessary as well. Unless you are a ranger or a druid, having an animal means having a pet. Pets do not get better just because you do. |
