| DM Zoc07-06-05, 07:58 PM | I was wondering about the practicality of making an Effigy who has been affected by the Awaken Construct (3.0, Savage Species) spell. This leads to a number of questions on my part about the whole operation: Does an Awakened Construct gain an Intelligence score? Does an Awakened Construct improve its Charisma score? Does an Awakened Construct get to re-roll for a new Wisdom score? Does an Awakened Construct lose its immunity to mind-affecting spells? What would the Level Adjustment be for an Awakened Effigy? Would an Awakened Construct receive a bonus to the DC of the check needed to realize its artificial nature if it was wearing clothes? Would there be any other unforeseen consequences? |
| primemover00307-06-05, 10:49 PM | Those are some fairly good questions Zoc... The wiz IMC has a 14 HD red dragon effigy right now and was briefly considering Awaken Construct. He basically hated that the damn robot was fairly useless if they got seperated (listen checks down corridors or through dungeon rooms). Have you found the Effigy to be too powerful in your game yet? 3d6 for Int, I think I'd model it like Awaken for Wis and Chr adding +1d3 to each stat. It'd still be a construct (like Warforged) so I think it still is immune to mind effecting spells. Clothes??? What check, the check to recognize it as a Construct and not the real creature? I believe it would know exactly what it was. Unforseen consequences... the Construct might not want to work for the creator, especially if the Chr checks fail. |
| Bloodtide_the_Red07-06-05, 11:21 PM | Well, the Awakened Construct sure does not say much. 1.Does an Awakened Construct gain an Intelligence score? You would have to have one to be 'human-like'. 3D6 is fine. 2.Does an Awakened Construct improve its Charisma score? Again it would need one to be human like. 3.Does an Awakened Construct get to re-roll for a new Wisdom score? I'd say no. It takes 'experence' to get wisdom. 4.Does an Awakened Construct lose its immunity to mind-affecting spells? Well, guess this could got either way. As they have a 'mind' they could be effected by mind-type effects, on the other hand you could say their mind is 'diffrent'. Guess it's up to you(I'd have them still immune myself). 5.What would the Level Adjustment be for an Awakened Effigy? If you go by Awaken in the PH, looks like +2. 6.Would an Awakened Construct receive a bonus to the DC of the check needed to realize its artificial nature if it was wearing clothes? Ummm, yes the DC check would be made at +2. 7.Would there be any other unforeseen consequences? Oh yes, my favorate part. The construct gets a personality and everything that comes with it. It gets hopes, fears, dreams and all that. And even better it would be a newborn, knowing nothing about the real world. There are some nice examples. Remember when Data got his emotion chip in the Star Trek movie?(or realy Data in general). The same goes for the other star trek constructs(like the doctor and seven-of-nine). T'elk of Stargate is another good example. Or even Martin, the Awakened Robot of Bicentennel Man. BT |

I could certainly add them into the world as part of my backstory, though. 3d6 for Int, I think I'd model it like Awaken for Wis and Chr adding +1d3 to each stat. It'd still be a construct (like Warforged) so I think it still is immune to mind effecting spells. 3d6 is the basis for NPC stats; would it be entirely out of order to use 4d6 (drop the lowest) as a means of generating Intelligence? Likewise, constructs have only 1 Charisma while animals average between 4 and 7; I think that an "awakened" being should have a maximum Charisma above 4. Clothes??? What check, the check to recognize it as a Construct and not the real creature? I believe it would know exactly what it was. It's normally a DC 20 Spot check to realize that an effigy is not a natural creature. I was thinking that it would be harder to notice if it was wearing clothes. 5.What would the Level Adjustment be for an Awakened Effigy? If you go by Awaken in the PH, looks like +2. The Awaken spell in the PHB adds racial hit dice, which are fairly useful to an Effigy. The spell in Savage Species doesn't really comment about it, but I can see it adding hit dice. 7.Would there be any other unforeseen consequences? Oh yes, my favorate part. The construct gets a personality and everything that comes with it. It gets hopes, fears, dreams and all that. And even better it would be a newborn, knowing nothing about the real world. Of course, that would be the fun part ;) |
| Bulabase07-07-05, 01:41 AM | Do you mean to apply the Awakened Construct template? If so, that changes a lot about the creature. I don't have the book on hand, but IIRC it changes the type and everything. There are clear rules addressing how its stats are effected including rolling a new Int. I don't think awakened constructs are immune to mind-affecting magic. |

There is an Incarnate Construct template, but that is not at all what I am looking for. |
| Bulabase07-07-05, 01:55 AM | Duh..... I suppose I should actually have the book on hand before I say anything. You want something that will make a construct have a mind, but not change its other qualities? |

You want something that will make a construct have a mind, but not change its other qualities?More or less, yes. I could care less about mind-affecting immunity or anything that doesn't make sense for it to keep. Specifically, I want the effects of the Awaken Construct spell, which should do exactly this, though it never specifies. |
