I'd like to give an awakened tree some class levels. Is this possible? It says nothing about this is the awaken spell description, yet I think that I remember that Eberron has an awakened tree with druid levels.

Any help would be appreciated.

As with everything: if it has 3 Int or higher, it can take class levels.

Nothing prevents it from doing so.

Heheh. An oak tree warlock.

Ooh...a willow rogue! (Sleight of Branch?)

In D&D, if someone asks you "if you were a tree, what kind of tree would you be?"...don't answer.

Can you reference this.

Edit: Can somebody reference this? I can't find anything on it in the section on adding class levels to monsters in the MM.

You couldn't add class levels as part of casting the spell, but once it's Awakened, the tree should be able to earn experience and acquire class levels, like most intelligent beings.

The verdict is out on adding class levels to monsters. The reference in the SRD is phrased like this:

Class Levels
Intelligent creatures that are reasonably humanoid in shape most commonly advance by adding class levels.
(emphasis added)

If your tree is "reasonably humanoid in shape" then the anser is yes.
If your tree is not, then it is a DM's call. The rules don't say.

If I allowed monster PCs, then I'd allow this.

Yeah, I'm the DM. I 've read that statement too, but it is somewhat ambiguous. The comments above that any creature with an Int of 3 or higher can gain class levels don't seem to be supported by the quote from the SRD. I thought maybe it was explained elsewhere. Can't find anything in the DMG either but I might be missing it.

I figure that if they did it in the Eberron Campaign Setting that it's plausible, but I like to have the support of the RAW. I'm ripping off the idea from Eberron.

A side question: Would an awakened tree be able to walk or move from its rooted spot?

Would an awakened tree be able to walk or move from its rooted spot? No. At that point you would be playing a treant. Which might be the better route anyway, since they already exist. As backstory you could claim that your reant started out as a tree, and was awakened by a retired druid. Over time, your awakening transformed you. Flavor flavor flavor... blah blah blah.

At least that removes most of the other awakened questions about the character.
