I was reading through some old waterdeep news when I came across this story (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/wdn/20060719a).

I think this sounds like alot of fun to put in a game...but I am wondering...mechanically speaking how would you create a backlash scroll that essentially casts a spell (say monsum 9) without the person reading the scroll aware of it?

EDIT: changed a word to be more what I wanted to ask... (a instead of the)
EDIT2.0: gonna crosspost to what's a DM to do...since it fits there to...maybe someone there will have an answer.

If a player wants to try this, they are essentially creating a cursed scroll, with bestow curse intentionally used on the item.

Seeker's suggestion sounds good to me, though I tend to dislike "dm fiat" when there are mechanisms around to use.

Craft Scroll, Craft Wondrous Item, Bestow Curse, any other spell.

There you go.

I agree with you about DM Fiat Kyu...

Rule 0 is there just like nuclear weapons, or the ancient weapon on Dekara (nerdy stargate reference, sorry) is there...it is there to NOT be used.

But I do think that bestow curse in conjunction with the backlash spell works...Thanks!

just make a mage create a new spell that is about the samething that the one you want to put on the scroll except that it has a backlash
you could just boost that fireball but since its only minor changes the player might not notice the changes and think its fireball
its still a 3rd level spell that do exactly as fireball but its 1d6/lvl +5d6 with a backlash of 2 constitution or whatever
