So we started a new campaing with some friends. We are lvl 16 and the wizard of the party found this "uber" combo that was going to help us defeat and huge evil outsider who´s been chaseing us for a while. This monster is like CR ? has like 400 hp spell resistance, fast healing, dmg red, etc. Anyway this "combo" consists in two feats one is sudden maximize spell and the other is residual magic with its lingering magic effect so he could maximize a polar ray spell at a cost of +0 two times in a row and make like 300 dmg (with no save) to weaken the monster enought so the rest of us could kill it. I have try to persuade him that he probably missread the feats description and that he is wasting two feats that could be exchange for some others way more usefull for this character. What do you think?

I can't really see why that combo doesn't work (although Sudden Empower would be better than maximize).

There's still the matter of hitting, breaching spell resistance and energy resistance. Besides, if he's casting Polar Rays, he's ... 15th? level, at least. He should be a badass. :)

That is the way the feat is supposed to work. Basically he gets a free use of metamagic as long as he casts the same spell the next round. But if he's 15th level, a maximized polar ray does 90 damage, plus another 90 next round only does 180 total. Where does the 300 come from?

And he still needs to make a ranged touch attack and breach the SR.
