if a PC got turned into a dog or some such creature by baleful polymorph, then got a polymorph other (or polymorph any object) to go back to their 'original form', do they get their original physical ability scores back, or do they get average stats for their race?

Ultimatly I would say that is up to you if you are the DM or up to your DM. According to the spell description, nothing for either spell specifically states that the pc in question would return to normal. IMO I think that the caster would have to know what the pc's original stats were to insure that he gained them back. However, Poly any object does say that target does gain the intelligence of the new form. From this you could say that since a caster does not know what the actual Int of say a dragon is, and the target recieves this Int score, then that could apply to all the targets stats and then he would return to normal. that it is just a function of the magic to do so.

Do what you want. If you want the pc to have the challange of returning to normal, then the spell does not help. I have a problem with the descriptions of these spells anyway, compared to 2nd ed. Why is Baleful Poly permanent at 5th level, Poly not even though it is 4th, and Poly Any Object at 8th is not permanent unless certain conditions apply.

By-the-book, they would now be an average member of the race. Polymorph other or object is not the way to remeove a Baleful Polymorph. You want dispel magic or break enchantment or such, but not polymorph.

No. When you get turned back into yourself, you are not an average member of the species. You are yourself. Being polymorphed into yourself is an *EXCEPTION* to the general rule, and you get your stats back.
