| tyrecian04-19-07, 09:43 PM | So i got this druid in my campaign hunting a party for an artifact they have. The ambush is set up, but on his spell list is Baleful Polymorph. Now the chances of the PCs missing their save is pretty low, but if they do i would like to know... How to get it off? It says its permanent, so that means that it isnt a magical effect, so Dispel is out. Also Break Enchantment is out, cause its not a constant effect, same with remove curse. So how would you get this off? If there isnt a way, i dont really want to permanently turn the wizard into a frog, so i might not use this... any ideas? |
| Iver Gearsham04-19-07, 10:17 PM | Don't target them with the spell use it too change a bunch of Aberrations your Druid should hate into toads put the "toads into boxes with big air holes Hide them in your Ambush site the lids should easily slide/lift off but be impossable for the toads till you Area effect Dispell Magic and they all pop out big nasty aberrations too chew into your foes then mop up what's left. |
| tyrecian04-19-07, 10:33 PM | So... i suppose then you are saying Dispel Magic works? Nice, they just have to beat the spell? Good idea i suppose, but that would be a bit much for this druid, he just wants the artifact, doesnt really want to kill the party outright. He is good (NG, but meh). still that sounds like an allright tactic, unless of course the aberrations make their saves, then the druid has to kill em all =) |
| Iver Gearsham04-19-07, 11:06 PM | Read Dispell Magic you can Auto pop any spell that you have cast IE the Bayful Poymorph and you can Hunt down the Abbys on a one one basis Before Thats were Bestow Curse comes in handy and After the ambush they have served their perpose and must die for their twisted existance. That party of PC's should be quite busy fighting and distracted. Your a nature guy the strong survive the weak die. |
| tyrecian04-20-07, 12:39 AM | That is a really good idea Iver, i like your style... You always post great ideas. I have used several in the past =) thanks 2 things, i wanted it to be fast-- in and out, so that the PCs ideally won't even wake up until the druid covers the thief's escape with sleet storm, spike growth, and ensnare. The item that they are staeling from the PCs is an artifact that is a Key... one of its features is that it constantly emits an anti-magic shell. That being said, getting the key away is primary goal for the enemies (me, playing the enemies as oriental adventures, wujen, shugenja, samurai, etc.) and that trick might be a little chaotic for this encounter since they wont know the exact location of the key and that anti-magic field could be disastrous with a bunch of explosive toads/vrock (they have scryed the party member, but the PCs are clever about that kind of stuff) until they get to the camp. I think that i will use that tactic in the future however, sounds like fun =) |
| Iver Gearsham04-20-07, 01:45 AM | WOW! I like hearing that I almost never hear from anyone who uses my ideas. Thank you :) that makes things worth while. And what other ideas did you use/like? If your guys know the area of the Antimagic Field you can detect it by a simple spell like Light Cover the glow so only your rouge can see it follow the edge as it winks in and out and you find the one who has it by a sort of triangulation. You can do some amusing things with a permanent AMF object carrying person One is Shrink Item and they walk forward up pops a wall they turn to the side up pops a wall they back off down goes the wall and so up down up down slowing them cosiderably. |
| tyrecian04-20-07, 02:19 AM | Well... for one "turning a floor into water with Poymorph Any Object and Dispelling totaly bypassing HP DR SR and energy immunitys." Also the fact that drowning is a fast way to kill something that can't swim (monk grappling with a non-breathing ioun stone, ouch... Or a demon that grapples and jumps into a lake, etc. Forcing that change and then putting EBTentacles at the base is a killer for any creature that can't breathe water, save your Disoel... although your dispel idea is awesome. Nasty nasty nasty. at any rate, yeah i have been coming up with some good ideas, but the characters just got the key, a ninja caster killer had it on him, worked well to against the CoDzilla cleric and his insane transmuter Monty Cook wizard buddy. The invasion force needs that key back, though, and i want them to want to follow the thieves enough to discover that portion of the adventure. In a party of 6 noone took a tracker. no druid, no ranger :P so its fairly easy for my minions to escape pretty fast and not be followed very far. The WuJen who is going to be hauling this AMField Key has a special artifact carrying case that turns the effect off (suppresses it) so he can Teleport. I really like the shrink idea, i think that if the theft fails (of course if these NPCs fail, the retreiver comes out eventually) or they are able to get it back again somehow before too long i will make a maze of shrunken walls. That has a chesstastic chinese puzzle aspect to it anyways :D I have had it already stop the party from going up a magical elevator as a whole in an undead Tower adventure, that split up was nice :) (they are only 6th level now, but will be 7th for this high level encounter with the 10th level party of 3 thieves, so i dont want to be too harsh, although they are all pretty much power gamers, so i dont feel so bad, hehe) I just wanted to make sure the Dr00d could cast baleful poly and not completely screw one of the party members, hehe. I dont mind save or dies (in fact they make things fun, and my players are 3, each with 2 chars, so its not the end of the world) but they are only 7-10th this weekend so i dont want to scare em too much yet, hehehehe Next weekend for the 2nd half of the campaign they start my module proper, and then its no holds barred. I think i might start the whole thing out with a bang... The baleful polymorph and abberations bang... in a trap =) classic dispel trap, only in the range on the other side is the box of abberations, don't mind if i do, once again thanks Iver ;) These boards are lots of fun for me, i find great ideas abound... and steal them for my crew P.S. The rogue is a Hengeyokai (race kinda like a Tanuki, or a tall thin badger-dude? lol, anyways) they can shapeshift into any small animal, so monkey then sparrow, etc. I figure since the party ALWAYS has a two front watch (open prairie, rolling hills, qtr moon, cloudy) this would be the best char, a high level rogue that is a small monkey, to get the key. Totally skills reliant. I dont want to alert the party in any way (one of them is a warlock, so he can Det Mag at will) so spells are out. I figured the good ole fashioned hunt through backpacks and their bag of holding would be a sure way to allow some time for them to sense the monkey... make it fair. If i wanted to go cheese, I kinda figured that invis would be nice, only worry bout move silently then, and when he starts to become visible (walk with hand outstretched), he will be able to do a ten foot triangulation before he can guess whereabouts the key is. The key is fairly obvious once its out (sheds light) but he can shapeshift agian and absorb it and it will be invisible. The AMF will still register becasue i dont think suppressing an artifact is possible in this light. |

It says its permanent, so that means that it isnt a magical effect, so Dispel is out. Also Break Enchantment is out, cause its not a constant effect, same with remove curse. No, no, no, NO. You've got it completely backwards. A Permanent duration magic spell is one that *has a duration*, just an indefinite one. It's a spell that keeps on going and going without end, but it *is* a spell. Baleful polymorph can be dispelled by dispel magic. An *Instantaneous* spell is a spell that does what it does and ends, meaning that any change wrought by the spell is now the new default situation, and that there's no spell going on making it happen. Flesh to stone, for example, is Instantaneous -- the spell comes along and turns an ordinary nonmagical person into an ordinary nonmagical statue. HOWEVER, break enchantment is a spell that specifically undoes Enchantment and Transmutation spells as well as curses regardless of their duration, including Instantaneous ones (but only if the Instantaneous spell is 5th level or lower). So even if BP really were Instantaneous rather than Permanent, and couldn't be dispelled, since it's a 5th-level spell break enchantment would still work on it. (Remove curse doesn't work, but only because there's nothing in baleful polymorph that defines the spell as a "curse".) |
