| idjester07-18-05, 09:35 AM | With the Baleful Utterance ability of a warlock he can use this ability to basically shatter objects as the shatter spell. If you look at the shatter spell it give the item a Will power saving throw. The warlock has a 16 DC with the shatter ability and used this ability to shatter a few weapons on the battlefield. First -since when do item have a will power? Second -Do the item need to have to roll a 16 or higher for a save since I don't think they would get any bonues for thier will power saves. Thanks for any help on this. |

(This notation does not mean that a spell can be cast only on objects. Some spells of this sort can be cast on creatures or objects.) A magic item’s saving throw bonuses are each equal to 2 + one-half the item’s caster level. Essentially, the wielder/holder gets to make a will save. If it is unmagical AND unattended, no save at all. |
| NeueRegel07-18-05, 09:59 AM | SRD 3.5:Saving Throws: Nonmagical, unattended items never make saving throws. They are considered to have failed their saving throws, so they always are affected by spells. An item attended by a character (being grasped, touched, or worn) makes saving throws as the character (that is, using the character’s saving throw bonus).Energy Attacks: Acid and sonic attacks deal damage to most objects just as they do to creatures; roll damage and apply it normally after a successful hit. Electricity and fire attacks deal half damage to most objects; divide the damage dealt by 2 before applying the hardness. Cold attacks deal one-quarter damage to most objects; divide the damage dealt by 4 before applying the hardness. From the FAQ3.5:Many animated objects have hardness scores. What affect, if any, will an animated object’s hardness have on spells used against the animated object? For example, an animated wooden table would have hardness 5, right? How would that hardness affect spells such as fireball, lightning bolt, Melf’s acid arrow, ray of frost, and magic missile? If the spell in question has an energy descriptor, hardness affects the attack as noted in the rules for damaging inanimate objects (see page 165 in the Player’s Handbook); here’s a summary: • Hardness applies to acid and sonic attacks. These attacks deal normal damage both to creatures and to objects, and thus would deal normal damage to an animated object (less the effect of the hardness). You would subtract 5 points for hardness from whatever damage a Melf's acid arrow spell deals to the animated table in your example.I don't have the details on the warlock or his shatter ability, so I can't be more specific, especially about targetting multiple swords, etc. NeueRegel |
| Sildatorak07-18-05, 04:13 PM | Essentially, the wielder/holder gets to make a will save. If it is unmagical AND unattended, no save at all. And if the magical item has a better saving through than the wielder/holder, it uses its save bonus instead of the owner. Generally magical items have all saving throws as good and use their caster level to see how good they are. They won't get any bonuses from attributes, though, unless they are intelligent (and then they'll only get a bonus to will saves since they still have no con or dex). |
| necrosnoop11007-18-05, 08:18 PM | Shatter and hence Baleful Utterance NEVER work on magical items only nonmagical items: Shatter Evocation [Sonic] Level: Brd 2, Chaos 2, Clr 2, Destruction 2, Sor/Wiz 2 Components: V, S, M/DF Casting Time: 1 standard action Range: Close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels) Area or Target: 5-ft.-radius spread; or one solid object or one crystalline creature Duration: Instantaneous Saving Throw: Will negates (object); Will negates (object) or Fortitude half; see text Spell Resistance: Yes (object) Shatter creates a loud, ringing noise that breaks brittle, nonmagical objects; sunders a single solid, nonmagical object; or damages a crystalline creature. Used as an area attack, shatter destroys nonmagical objects of crystal, glass, ceramic, or porcelain. All such objects within a 5-foot radius of the point of origin are smashed into dozens of pieces by the spell. Objects weighing more than 1 pound per your level are not affected, but all other objects of the appropriate composition are shattered. Alternatively, you can target shatter against a single solid object, regardless of composition, weighing up to 10 pounds per caster level. Targeted against a crystalline creature (of any weight), shatter deals 1d6 points of sonic damage per caster level (maximum 10d6), with a Fortitude save for half damage. Arcane Material Component: A chip of mica. You can only attempt to use Shatter in three ways: 1) Break many brittle nonmagical objects 2) Sunder one solid nonmagical object 3) Damage crystalline creature |
