Can Bane (the +1 weapon enhancement) be applied to a Crossbow so that a player can fire Baned bolt after baned bolt OR must bane be applied to individual bolts (one at a time only)?

Is there a DMG reference to this?

It says right in the DM's guide that any weapon with an ability bestows its power onto ammunition fired from it. Second, are you talking about the Bane spell? Or the weapon ability. If its the speel then you can target the weapon (crossbow for example) and for the duration of the spell anything fired form the crossbow has the bane ability.

I'm referring to the Bane +1 weapon enhancement in the DMG. Must this ability apply only to ammunition or can it apply to the Crossbow itself in order to fire unlimited baned ammunition.

Rappin answered your question. Ranged weapons with an enchantment bestow it upon their ammunition. A +1 bane longbow/crossbow bestows the +1 bane properties on their ammunition so an arrow fired from said longbow would be a +1 bane arrow until just after it struck its target. It's in the DMG under magic weapons if you want the reference.

Also, if you do choose to apply bane to the bolts instead (which is not a bad idea), then you do it in lots of 50, not one at a time.

Agreeing with others, particularly Jaelis's 'not a bad idea'.

Specialist enchantments, such as "bane" are more appropriate for ammo, not the weapon.

That is, get youself a +2 bow and buy 20 +1 human bane arrows, and 20 +1 elf bane arrows, instead of a +1 Human Bane bow and 40 +2 arrows

Usually, that makes a lot more sense.

Usually, that makes a lot more sense.Just remember that all ammunition is automatically destroyed when it hits a target and has a 50% chance of being destroyed when it misses a target.

Everyone knows about the ammunition destruction :). But still. It's usually nice to have specialist arrows with special materials and banes, and apply some of the more 'general' enhancements on your ranged weapon.

I'll agree with this one, except in the case of Magebane. I suppose that could be put in the category of "more general enhancements", though.

each weapon special ability will tell you if a missile launcher bestows the ability on its ammunition - for example, see the description for Bane in the DMG:

Bows, crossbows, and slings so crafted bestow the bane quality upon their ammunition.

some do, some dont - Bane does.

If you have a +2 bow, why are you using +2 arrows with it? Regular ones would be cheaper and just as effective.
