Hi,

I tried this at Monsters forum but get very little feedback (Thanks cwllyclgh you were the only one).
So, the queston were and still is if any of you have Ideas for things that Devils hates, fears, or otherwise opposes.
I am supposed to Banish a HUGE devil supposedly with ultimate SR and will saves so I have to gather as much as objects as I can.

I /we) have figured out following focuses:
* Good aligned items
* Chaos aligned items
* Holy Water
* Living demon
* Good / Neutral deities holy symbols
* Light (maybe) Daylight or so
* Silver (since many devil's DR is overcomad by it)

But there have be more. All ideas appreciated.

Thanks!

Dimensional Shackles (get an oversized set)
Instead of banishing them, you keep 'em trapped.
Then kill 'em or otherwise hold 'em forever.

It's unlikely, that actually trapping it would work, but I'm sure, that a baatezu would loath being trapped by a mortal instead of the other way around.

Other things could be:

A celestial - planar ally for a lantern archon should be cheap enough
Chaos - get some chaos matter from Limbo or call some lesser slaadi
Maybe the symbol of a rival baatezu?

Has this devil been defeated by a mortal before? If so you can add that mortal's symbol to the growing list. Learning this devil's True Name would also be a HUGE advantage.

Magic Circles, Holy Word, and Word of Chaos can usually ruin a devil's day.

...or Chaos hammer or wish, too, but those are a little much...

If you have a serious problem with SR, though, there are some nonmagical ways to mess them up, as well. Devils are smaller than demons, in general, and if you have some size on your side, they aren't too tough to toss around. Although the later ones can teleport, it's still spell-like and hard to cast in a grapple. Of course, that assumes you have access to a huge grappler. (Well, my players do...)

Or you could give your rogue Baneblind Armour (Evil)
You can also whip out a +2 Holy silver sword of Bane (Evil) and start hacking, but those tend to be expensive.

The devil's true name would indeed be a great asset.

If you are evil, you could attempt a call planar ally to get some inside information on your foe from a lesser devil.

If the devil to be banished is a major figure in your cosmology, perhaps some research at a good library would provide some insight. Knowledge skill checks (history, the planes, arcana, religion?) might also give some clues.

Anything you can do to get SPECIFIC information would be useful.

As an aside - I assume your DM is giving some kind of bonus to your banishment check if you can get enough mojo going against the devil?

just for information:

a pit fiend that is Huge size is 37-54HD and has a will save +21 and SR 32
now from the SRD:

Banishment
Abjuration
Level: Clr 6, Sor/Wiz 7
Components: V, S, F
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Targets: One or more extraplanar creatures, no two of which can be more than 30 ft. apart
Duration: Instantaneous
Saving Throw: Will negates
Spell Resistance: Yes

A banishment spell is a more powerful version of the dismissal spell. It enables you to force extraplanar creatures out of your home plane. As many as 2 Hit Dice of creatures per caster level can be banished.

You can improve the spell’s chance of success by presenting at least one object or substance that the target hates, fears, or otherwise opposes. For each such object or substance, you gain a +1 bonus on your caster level check to overcome the target’s spell resistance (if any), the saving throw DC increases by 2.

Certain rare items might work twice as well as a normal item for the purpose of the bonuses (each providing a +2 bonus on the caster level check against spell resistance and increasing the save DC by 4).

Arcane Focus: Any item that is distasteful to the subject (optional, see above).

-------------------------------------------------------------

what is your caster level as that will determine if it might be better to go another route if you are not high enough.

Once you get a creature Banished, I cannot locate a resource in 3.5 that mentions how long the creature in question is ejected from the plane for? Anyone?

My level 16 wizard has banished two pit fiends and a balor with just that spell. (although having 8 levels of Intantrix helps...) Just memorise MORE THAN ONE and try, try again. Either he gets banished or you get mashed.

Draconomicon has a spell to lower SR, which ignores SR. Not that you haven't already fought him already.

It's always better to banish devils somewhere deadlier than where they came from. If you intend on relocating them, try somewhere less inviting than Hell, say, the negative energy plane, the Abyss, or the Tartian Depths.

Definitely a house rule, but one that just "feels" right.

I was under the impression that Banishments worked for 100 years, or until the Banisher called forth the outsider.

But yeah, if somehow there could be multiple resistance lowering spells done by arcane and divine methods, then go for banishment.

In our game it has been set at 24 hours. I am wondering, as there is nothing in the Manual of the Planes nor the Planar Handbook, what does it take to get an official ruling on something like this?? I would be interested in hearing other examples of banishment timeframes and the game logic behind them.
