| subvertisement07-07-04, 04:34 PM | Quick question, Can a bard or sorc use a higher lvl spell slot to cast a lower lvl spell assuming they still meet all other requirements (material components etc) just as other casters who memorize can use higher lvl slots for lower lvl spells? I assumed so but poking around briefly today I couldnt find a section in the PHB that came right out and said it, if you had an SRD quote or PHB page number that'd rock. thanks. |
| Moonstonedragon07-07-04, 04:42 PM | Im 70% sure yes, I do know I read it somewhere in the 3rd ed book at least, might of got rid of it in 3.5. Your giving up a spell level higher so I dont see the harm in allowing it. Ill look around and see if I can find a page number. |
| Beamup07-07-04, 04:48 PM | AFAICT, there is nothing in the 3.5 PHB that says so. There should be, but all mentions of the ability are in the context of preparing a lower-level spell in a higher-level slot. The RAW do not appear to support it, though I expect it's just an oversight. |
| Kyaran07-07-04, 04:54 PM | You bet. :) SRD: A spellcaster always has the option to fill a higher-level spell slot with a lower-level spell. It's under Magic Overview > Arcane Spells > Spell Slots |

It's under Magic Overview > Arcane Spells > Spell Slots Unfortunately, it is more properly under Magic Overview > Arcane Spells > Preparing Wizard Spells > Spell Slots and thus does not necessarily apply to sorcerers... especially since sorcerers never "fill" their slots with anything. The intent is clear... but unfortunately it's nothing more than intent. The designers apparently meant to give spontaneous casters that ability, but overlooked it. |
| subvertisement07-07-04, 05:06 PM | Sounds like what I was looking for, thanks. My concern is that bards and sorcs dont "fill" spell slots, but rather they "spend" or "use" them, but Im guessing I'm just being a dink and looking for too much in the way of specifics. Were there any quotes that directly referenced bards/sorcs and "filling" their spell slots? |

The SRD omits any rules on spell slots from the Bard/Sorc section (except a passing reference in "Daily Readying of Spells"). The PH says that Bards/Sorcs are treated like wizards, except for the listed points. The SRD rule on spell slots makes no mention of preparation, and explicitly mentions "spellcasters" (not just wizards):Spell Slots: The various character class tables show how many spells of each level a character can cast per day. These openings for daily spells are called spell slots. A spellcaster always has the option to fill a higher-level spell slot with a lower-level spell. A spellcaster who lacks a high enough ability score to cast spells that would otherwise be his or her due still gets the slots but must fill them with spells of lower level.Summary: any spellcaster can cast a lower level spell from a higher level slot. How you get the spell into the slot in the first place varies by caster type. |
