| RogerWilco05-07-06, 02:51 PM | I have two problems: - Do bards use the same verbal and somatic components as other spellcasters of the same spell (like wizards). I just can't find any info on this. - Does glibness have a verbal component. Spells: A bard casts arcane spells, which are drawn from the bard spell list. He can cast any spell he knows without preparing it ahead of time. Every bard spell has a verbal component (singing, reciting, or music). Glibness Transmutation Level: Brd 3 Components: S Casting Time: 1 standard action Range: Personal Target: You Duration: 10 min./level (D) So the glibness spell says only somatic, but the description of bard spellcasting says that every bard spell has a verbal component ??? |
| DaMullet05-07-06, 02:55 PM | Lies. Not all bard spellcasting needs verbal components. Not Glibness, at least. Or it's a typo. Or something. |
| Shadowfax705-07-06, 04:32 PM | Yes, to both your questions. A verbal or somatic component is the same for any caster and no verbal component needs to be listed for glibness because it's a Bard only spell and all Bard spells have verbal components. |
| RogerWilco05-07-06, 05:13 PM | Yes, to both your questions. A verbal or somatic component is the same for any caster and no verbal component needs to be listed for glibness because it's a Bard only spell and all Bard spells have verbal components. But other bard only spells like Summon instrument do list having a verbal component, while glibness lists only having a somatic component. And there doesn't seem to be an errata on glibness for this. (it is in there for something else) |
| JulesCARV05-07-06, 06:02 PM | I think the idea is that speaking a verbal component just before telling a bunch of lies would sort of give the game away, because people would recognize that you just cast a spell. Subtly waving your fingers around, while distracting people with your other hand, or by directing them toward something else, isn't so easily detected. |
| was_fired05-07-06, 06:08 PM | While the idea behind it makes sense, it still isn't possible. All bard spells require verbal components. If glibness lacks one a bard cannot cast it. Does it make it worse? Yep, but otherwise it makes no sense from an internal consistency standpoint. |
| Adam Smite05-07-06, 07:04 PM | Perhaps the verbal component is just part of the lie. 'tsk, tsk, no sir, I didn't just walk out of this bank with three bags of 1000 platinum. These bags happen to have mother's laundry in them. If you'll excuse me...' |

These bags happen to have mother's laundry in them. If you'll excuse me...' Well, if that was it, wouldn't it say so? Does anyone know any other bard spells that do not list a verbal component? |
| JulesCARV05-07-06, 08:08 PM | I wonder... if a bard casts glibness and then writes a letter and sends it, completing the writing of the letter before glibness expires, and it arrives two weeks later, does the reader find it nearly impossible to detect lies in it, because when it was written, the bard was glib, or is it no harder than normal, because the bard's glibness spell has expired by the time the letter is received? Anyway, there is a contradiction here: the bard description says "Every bard spell has a verbal component (singing, reciting, or music)." The glibness spell is bard-only, but lists only a somatic component. Could it be that they thought that some other class might get glibness (e.g. bard --> divine bard --> archivist? Artificer or warlock?), and then they would be able to cast it without verbal components, but the bard, the only class which gets glibness "out of the box" itself must use verbal components? It really is rather strange. There are two other bard spells without verbal components: gaseous form and mislead. However, both of these spells are also on other spell lists (sorcerer/wizard, luck, trickery, air). It would therefore be reasonable to guess that when a bard casts these spells, they have a verbal component, but when a sorcerer does, they don't. However, glibness is a different case: it appears exclusively on the bard list, yet lists as only have a somatic component. |

Glibness just dont requires a verbal component because you must talk, use your own voice for using it. |

| ClementWillowbreaker05-09-06, 10:46 AM | Glibness is not the only spell without a Verbal component. Joyful Noise is another Bard spell without it. The PHB just got too descriptive with their reason for bards not being able to Silent their spells. |
| CaoSlayer05-09-06, 03:13 PM | But then for example the shout spell wouldn't need to list a verbal component either? Well, when you cast shout, you shout in the place, when you cast glibness you can wait some minutes before speaking the first thing. |
