A basic spell question for a new player...

1. Do Divine casters know ALL their possible spells, they simply pick which to prepare? This is opposed to Arcane which only know a limited amount (which can increase over time) and can cast as many as able per day?

Thank you

Yes. Druids, clerics, rangers, and paladins know every last spell of every level they can cast.

If you buy a book (e.g. Complete Divine) with new druid spells, then the druid you're playing can prepare those spells at the next chance she gets.

If you buy a book (e.g. Complete Arcane) with new wizard spells, then the wizard you're playing can not prepare those spell untill she either finds someone in-game to copy the spells from or untill she levels up.

Generally speaking, yes.
Archivists and Favoured Souls are among the exceptions.

A more accurate quote might be:
Druids, clerics, rangers, and paladins know every last spell of every level they can cast from the sources their DM allows.

Rule 0 is always in effect. It doesn't need to be restated every time someone makes a comment about the rules.

Ok, thank you.

In my case then, I can be generally safe trying to find a resource (PDF or such) that lists all the spells and simply check those which are "known" or "prepared" and be ok in doing so for the general classes.

Again, thanks for confirming. I'll run off to the Digital Area to look for a good source.

InkBlot, I don't think Loki5654's is useless. From what I see on the boards, many DMs have specific rules about Divine Casters using spells from non-core sources, so this isn't Just-Another-Houserule (tm).

Thanks Thiez.

And thanks Inkblot.

Of course Rule Zero is always in effect. The OP's question led me to believe that they were new to the game. Sometimes new players need to be reminded to ask their DM's permission before bringing something into the game.

That's the only reason I mentioned it.
