basic telepathy spell? [Archive] - Wizards Community

06-17-07, 02:12 PM What kind of level would a spell be that granted short range (as per the spell range) telepathy between 1 target per level? It would have roughly the same limitations as the Detection spells (5 feet of stone, 1 inch of lead, etc...). I was hoping for a 24 hour duration on it.

I'm thinking level 1 or 2, leaning more towards 1 due to all the limitations.

What do you guys think?

Telepathic Bond
Divination
Level: Sor/Wiz 5
Components: V, S, M
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Targets: You plus one willing creature per three levels, no two of which can be more than 30 ft. apart
Duration: 10 min./level (D)
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: No

You forge a telepathic bond among yourself and a number of willing creatures, each of which must have an Intelligence score of 3 or higher. Each creature included in the link is linked to all the others. The creatures can communicate telepathically through the bond regardless of language. No special power or influence is established as a result of the bond. Once the bond is formed, it works over any distance (although not from one plane to another).

If desired, you may leave yourself out of the telepathic bond forged. This decision must be made at the time of casting.

Telepathic bond can be made permanent with a permanency spell, though it only bonds two creatures per casting of permanency.

Pieces of eggshell from two different kinds of creatures.

The thing is, that my spell is much more limited than Rary's.

His is regardless of language, whereas mine is still language dependant. His functions over any distance, whereas mine is limited to 25ft+5ft/level.

The only real purpose to my spell concept is for the members of the link to be able to speak to one another without NPCs hearing them. If they're far enough away that they wouldn't be able to talk, then they're probably out of the spell's range.

06-17-07, 04:44 PM Alright that's two mitigating factors. Language isn't a big thing since almost everything out there speaks Common, but the range distance is a signifigant factor, so maybe drop it down one level to 4th. If you want to take it down to 3rd level, I'd say you'd also have to nerf the duration down to minutes or rounds per level.

Barring that, the Message spell can come close, but it's somewhat less subtle. Then again, it's a cantrip.
