battle field control spells.

I am looking for spells that are effective against several weaker targets and spells that work better against single more powerful targets.

What lv are you?

There are simpler spells like grease, hideous laughter, hold person/monster or wall of force. If you are higher lv, forcecage and maze are very choice, since they bypass saves or sr.

actually this is a good question. happen to have any opinions as to what spells a 6th level wizard could get that can be used to control a fairly large number of creatures (not talking an army, but maybe 7-10 creatures) but won't get in the way of those in melee combat? in our campaign im one of 2 people that don't melee, the other being an arcane archer. I'm having trouble finding spells that will let me deal damage or help with some control without hindering their ability to fight well. sadly, all my spells have to come from the PHB :weep:

If you're looking for something to drop while the melee is going, haste and slow are some of the best around for your level, especially considering you're limited to the PHB. Alone, they're great. Combined, they're lethal.

As far as spells to drop before your ranks have closed: stinking cloud and web are both great. Glitterdust is just amazing. Sleet Storm can make the enemy's lives miserable.

Mirror Image and Blur/Displacement are great for any wizard, as they keep you alive long enough to do your job. False life is another great option, especially if you can get your hands on a lesser empower rod.

I've had lots of fun with suggestion. Its versatility is staggering.

Dont forget about fly. Not only will it save your life by keeping you out of melee range in most combats, it also gives you a commanding view of the battlefield.

Just looking for general spells really. Level is not important.
