| Ascian03-10-04, 10:32 AM | Can anybody account for the cost of a Bead of Healing from a Lesser Strand of Prayer Beads? I'm having a difficult time figuring out why it costs as it does. A spell of its level would cost 6,000gp on a slotted item, which I do not believe Prayer Beads are, meaning the cost would have to be boosted to 12,000gp. However, that's not accounting for the Remove Blindness/Deafness and Remove Disease options, which I would imagine would raise the price even further. So why does it cost only 9,000gp? Help greatly appreciated, as I'm trying to figure out how to create a Cure Serious Wounds version, priced to scale. |

Prayer beads are part of a necklace, and are considered an uncustomary space limitation as a result. It allows cure serious wounds (3), remove blindness/deafness(3) or remove disease(3) once per day. All spells are at 5th level of ability. All for 9000gp. This is treated as a single 3rd level spell at 5th level in an uncustomary space, once per day, or ((3 x 5 x 2000)*1.5)/5 or 9000gp. It is not considered to have multiple spells (and thus does not pay a x2 multiplier) because you can only use one of the three spells one/day. If you could use all three once per day, it would cost (((3x5x2000)*1.5)*2)/5 or 18,000gp. Help greatly appreciated, as I'm trying to figure out how to create a Cure Serious Wounds version, priced to scale. It already is cure serious wounds. Unless I totally missed something in your post. |
| Ascian03-10-04, 04:41 PM | [Post edited because either Ascian misread, the previous post was unclear, or a bit of both] All right, I suppose I can get with that. But I am surprised that the additional abilities, though they cannot be cast in the same day, don't add to the cost. If this is truly the case, could one not theoretically create a Bead of Third-Level Spells that has the ability to cast any third-level spell, but only once per day, for the same price as a Bead of Healing? I simply haven't seen anything in the books that covers that, and would appreciate it if you could educate me. |
| Everach03-10-04, 04:47 PM | Originally posted by Ascian I'm afraid I don't see that you've explained the 9,000gp price, though. You gave the appropriate equation for it to cost 6,000gp, as an item of its spell/caster level, but I still don't understand how it jumps up to being a 9,000gp item. That's because I left a typo in my post. Check it now. |

As a DM, I would use 3 spells as the max for this kind of item. But there's no rule against doing a bead that allows any 1 3rd level spell 1/day. No DM worth his salt would allow it though. |
| Ascian03-10-04, 05:15 PM | I don't suppose you've got a page number to reference that? I could have sworn multiple similar abilities put a 1.5x multiplier on all abilities after the first, and multiple dissimilar abilities had a 2x multiplier on secondary abilities. |

I'm using the chart in the DMG v3.5 on pg 285. Similar and dissimilar abilities doesn't ring a bell. |
| Ascian03-10-04, 07:27 PM | But that chart says that 'multiple different abilities' call for the higher item cost to be multiplied by two. Though I'm not entirely certain what even *that* means. |

Because you can only use one of them per charge. Hope that helps. |
| Ascian03-10-04, 09:48 PM | Thank you very much for indulging my curiosity. If I might impose one final question, where did you find these definitions of 'multiple' and 'different'? I've never seen them before. Thanks again for helping me out. |

Webster's :) Its not clearly defined in the DMG. Wizards was kind enough to provide a chart for making magic items and then immediately made a number of magic items that don't conform 100% to the chart, like this prayer bead. Hope that helps. |
| Ascian03-11-04, 09:32 AM | That does help. Thanks again for your patience, you've been more than fair. |
