Is there any way to garauntee a 20 on a single roll to beat SR, or a way to instantly increase your caster level by 10 or more on a SR check for a single spell?

Why yes sir there is!

Assay Spell Resistance
Divintion
Clr/Sor/Wiz 4
swift action
personal
1 round / lvl

(paraphrasing) adds +10 to your caster level checks to overcome one creatures SR. Gotta see the target to cast it.

Spell is found in the Spell Compendium.

Yup, Assay Resistance is great.
Plus, I recommend Arcane Mastery feat. It enables you to take 10 on caster level checks.

Assay Resistance + Arcane Mastery means you can always beat SR equal to (or less than) your caster level + 20 . That will eliminate luck from the equation (at least from situations where your caster level + 20 is enough :)).

While it won't get your check up by 10, Spell Enhancer (and I think one other similar spell) do provide a +2 or thereabouts to it, and they aren't target-specific. They increase your caster level in general, too, so you'll do more damage/have more range/etc.

yes, arcane mastery, power penetration and greater power pen, as well as assay resistance should pretty much bypass any SR that you're likely to encounter (caster level +24!!!). at the expense of a few feats, but at high levels its worth it as SR will become the bane of your existence otherwise.

Given that spell penetration and its greater cousin only add +4 to that equation, it is my opinion that they are not worth the investment in any game in which assay resistance and arcane mastery are allowed. Just my 2cp.

Greater SP is a +4. +4 is 20% on a d20, which is significant. There is a lot of difference between needing a 12 or better and needing an 8 or better.

Having said that - the main cure for SR is using spells that bybass it. That why a wizard beats a sorcerer at high levels - the sorc is stuck forever with the fireball spell they chose at level 5. Kicks butt at level 8, but once the damage maxes out at level 10, it becomes less useful.

The sorc can always opt to swap out fireball at higher lvs for another utility spell.:) Plus, 10d6 for a 3rd lv spell is still nice.

Also, since a sorc learns spells so slowly, he can choose to rely on metamagicked versions of lower lv damage spells so that he is free to choose other spells, rather than having to go for the top damage spell of each new lv just to keep up.

Thus, a lv14 sorc could learn limited wish or forcecage, while relying on twinned fireballs or empowered cones of cold for his blasting needs.:)

Well the SR i'm trying to beat is i believe 51. 40th level drow. Now it has been seriously metagamed, and i would never think of allowing it in a real game, but it is for and RP forum, where we follow the rules (atleast when they benifet the 40th level drow :P). So so far, i'm at a garaunteed 40, and now pondering on the lat 11 (for some reason i'd forgotten it was 11 + character level, bah ).

My math on it so far is as follows. Arcane mastery +10, Assay spell resistance +10, CR 16, Item image x2 +4 to caster level = 40 so far.

Any thoughts on the last 11....i think someone needs to be put in their place ;)

So wait, you're a CR16 vs a CR40?

Good luck with that.

lol, yeah it seem's impossible, but if i can beat the SR, i can win. Like i said before, it'd never fly in a real game, it's just a forum thing.

OK, so you are a 16th level character trying to beat SR 51?

16 (your level)
+10 (Assay Resistance)
+15 (Lower Spell Resistance, but enemy has to fail Fort save)
+10 (Arcane Mastery)

Total: 51.

Now the key would be to beat his Fort ;)

Yup :)
Boost your Save DC: Mystic Surge (+2) + Spell Enhancer (+1). If nothing works, keep casting it, and pray for a natural 1 on his saving throw. :)

An off topic question: Would you guys allow Arcane Mastery with Dispel Magic checks?

Could i Twin Assay Spell Resistance, essentially doubling its bonus?
smrtgmp

09-28-06, 07:09 PM
no, bonuses from the same source dont stack unless they specify otherwise.

What class are you? Divine Spell Power could add another 1-4 caster levels.

But seriously, this all sounds like it's a lot of work... why not just buy a whole bunch of divinely empowered+maximized fire seeds and drop them on him from a nice safe height. No SR. No Save. (given it's a forum question)

How about using spells that eschew sr altogether?:P
