| cwslyclgh11-03-03, 06:13 PM | welcome to the 31st installment of Magic Item of the week. please let me know your thoughts on this weeks item. Wes :) Bedroll of peaceful sleep: Much prized by those that must travel alone, these magic bedrolls provide a warm, safe place to sleep. Any creature that wants to attack a person that is sleeping in a bedroll of peaceful sleep must make a Will Save (DC 11) or be unable take any offensive action against the sleeper. The person in the bedroll must be sleeping to benefit from this magical affect. Fiant abjuration, Caster Level: 1st, Prerequisites: Craft Wondrous Item, sanctuary, Market Price: 5,000gp, [/i]Weight:[/i] 5lbs. |
| Seeker9511-03-03, 06:35 PM | While I would feel safer in this, I still would not feel safe. Meta-gamingly-speaking, how many middle-of-the-night attackers are going to fail a DC 11 Will save? This is good against naturally occuring wild animals, but nothing with an agenda. When I first clicked on this, I thought it was going to be a sleeping bag / rope trick combination. Any ideas on how to make this safe for the solo traveler, rather than just safe for the guy not on watch that shift? |
| cwslyclgh11-03-03, 06:38 PM | howabout making the sleeping bag a permanent doorway to a mordies magnificent mansion... ;) |
| Seeker9511-03-03, 09:14 PM | Now that's a sleeping bag I would feel safe in! But how much would it set me back? |
| gradea11-04-03, 03:47 AM | enough to cast that spell 1/day if your cheep, or a continuous effect (2500xspell levelxcaster level if im correct) so 7x13x2000x1/4 (45500) for once a day or 7x13x2500 (227500) for a continuous never ending one |
| Lord Arkhaven11-04-03, 09:20 AM | That saving throw needs to be boosted or else it's a silly item. Based on the inheirent randomness in the system all creatures - regardless of save bonus - could bypass the magic 50% of the time. The bag would therefore never had earned the name of Peaceful Sleep. If you ask me it's a way to burn a player who buys the item in good faith and thinks they can travel alone. Tell me again why this item is better than a simple Alarm spell? |
| Seeker9511-04-03, 10:24 AM | Wes, ignore Arkhaven's sarcasm (which covers just about the entire reply) and instead take from it the one element of it he tried to hide in invective. This item does not provide the peaceful slumber it advertises. Can we get an upgrade (with stats / pricing)? I love the idea, and think it is a viable product pitch. Now we just need engineering to work with sales to provide a product the consumer will demand! :P |
| Heron_Marked_Blade11-04-03, 01:48 PM | I like this idea. I wonder if it could be combined with the Travel Cloak [Magic of Faerun] for a one-cloak-camping-kit? |
| Zherog11-04-03, 02:18 PM | Wes, perhaps you could incorporate Alarm into the item creation process so the sleeping person is alerted whenever a creature has made its will save. This would at least have the effect of preventing the user of the Bedroll from being Coup de Grace'd in their sleep. ;) Another option would be to bump the caster level on the Sanctuary spell a bit - at least that would make the Will Save a bit harder. of course, that may also have the effect of making the price of the item outrageous. |
| Thelon Fairblade11-04-03, 02:34 PM | I was going to suggest both of the things Zherog did: Alarm (for warning when being approached), and increasd level. However, you would need to increase the *spell level*, not the caster level. Increasing the spell level to 2, for example, requires a minimum WIS of 12, so the DC immediately jumps from 11 to 13 (2 for spell level, 1 for WIS bonus). However, at this point, it becomes far safer and cheaper to just get an item of rope trick (also 2nd level, and also already suggested). What you *could* do is define the sleeping bag as the "extradimensional space" of the "rope trick" effect. You could add maybe Chameleon (+10 hide) to the outisde of the bag (since it would still be present in the wherever entered), and reduce the costs for the limitations of "only when someone is sleeping in it", and "Chameleon only applies to the bag", etc. Call it, oh, 6000gp. (rope Trick is 12000 base as a Continuous effect, but you only have 1 person (not 3), the bag actually exists, and the "continuous" effect will only last about 8 or 9 hours each day, the duration of sleep). |
| Lord Arkhaven11-04-03, 02:40 PM | I'm all for new magic items and have enjoyed that which csw... whatever has presented, but in all honesty this item wouldn't see much use in a normal game. Travelling alone is foolhardy and most people have a partner or two or even a cohort to post watches. Posting a watch costs no gold pieces, requires no feats, and provides a Spot and Listen roll whenever something bad is going to happen. It's like an Improved Alarm spell because it comes with some sort of attack form as well. :) |
| Thelon Fairblade11-04-03, 02:41 PM | Slightly OT: from my campaign, a "lost empire" used to make Blankets of Healing, an item created by someone else on these boards. Basically: CLW, 8 hours to "cast", only on sleeping target (the one under the blanket) 1 (SL) * 1 (CL) * 2000 * 1/5 = 400 base * 1/3 (takes 8 hours to "cast" = 133 gp market value. One of my more creative players sewed one of these into the padding of his full plate armor... if he was ever "dropped" or held or otherwise incapacitated for a long period of time, the blanket would activate and at least heal him for 1d8+1 hp... Great for those rare times when you "win", but fall unconscious (like at the end of a barbarian rage or something). Wouldn't cost much to add this to your Sleeping Bag... |
