My DM is allowing my beguiler character to take the Apprentice feat from the DMG2 (pg 176-179).

In particular I'm interested in others' opinions on how the rules about a spontaneous caster apprentice works with a beguiler.

Here are the elements of the feat I was interested in hearing opinions on:

1. At first level, a spontaneous caster gains an additional 1st level spell beyond the normal number of spells known.

2. Each time a spontaneous spellcaster gains a level he can learn a new spell in place of a spell already known.

Now my DM has read through the Apprentice feat and is still allowing it for my beguiler character, so I didn't attempt to pull the wool over his eyes and try to sneak a powerful feat into the game. I recognize that with the beguiler's large spell list and the other abilities granted by the class this is a strong feat for the character.

What I am curious about is how other DMs and players who are more familiar with the balance of the game would suggest using this feat so it isn't unbalancing, while still remaining a good choice for a somewhat more versatile beguiler.

For example:

Should the beguiler only be able to add new spells from the enchantment and illusion schools, as if it were an advanced learning ability?

Should the spells gained from Advanced Learning not be allowed to be replaced with other spells later on?

Should all schools be open, but a mechanic similar to the Eclectic Learning alternate class ability of the Warmage be imposed (ie: you sacrifice a 2nd level spell to gain a new 1st level spell)?

Should certain schools just be forbidden (such as evocation and necromancy), but all other schools open to choose from?

Should the beguiler not be allowed to swap out a spell every level like the sorceror or bard can, but rather only swap out a spell every-other level?

Should the beguiler only be able to swap out spells that are not illusion or enchantment spells?

These are various houserules/adaptations I've thought of to make sure that I'm considering enough options with this feat. Perhaps others feel that they are unnecessary and the Apprentice feat as written is not too powerful for a beguiler.

I'd really appreciate any opinions anyone has. I'm aware of the FAQ regarding Extra Spell and the warmage/beguiler, and the importance of not expanding the spell list too much. I'm interested in making sure that I don't use this feat the DM allowed me to take to make things difficult for him.

Thanks.
