Best spells for a 5th level wizard, or best spells of 5th level for a wizard?

Asking nicely won't hurt! :)

Shadow Evocation: Because it can be so many other spells.

Greater Dimension Door. (Spell Compendium) Think dimension door, but short-range and usable as a move action for 1 round/level. DEFINITELY worth it.

Prismatic Ray (Spell Compendium) Random prismatic effect at ranged touch, niiice!

Wall of Force (PHB)- the name says it all.

Greater Blink (Spell Compendium)- This is especially effective when you have quickened spells at your disposal.

Lightning Leap (Complete Mage?)- If you've ever wanted to turn yourself into a lightning bolt, this is for you.

as above+:

Telekinesis - VERY versatile. Really good against Incorporeal/Ethereal.
Greater Fireburst (SpC) - As far as damage goes, this is actually rather good.
Teleport - Go anywhere, whenever you want. Gets you out of jams.

Dominate whatever it was at level 5.

Start building your army. Once you cast it, it lasts for 9 days and at any time in theese days you can order him to accept any spell you cast on him...like a new dominate.

By far the top 4 5th level core wizard spells are:

1. Teleport.

2. Teleport

3. Teleport

4. Magic Jar

-------------------
Teleport will solve 75% of the problems you had early on. Finished off your encounter at 2 PM, and are all out of spells? Time to pop on home and rest up for tomorrow's battles. Maybe get a bath, have a nice dinner and see a show tonight. Life is good.

Magic Jar will usually solve the other 25%. You get yourself a horse/follower/cohort/hireling, take possesion of his body, have him carry yours around in a nice safe bag of holding. When it is time to fight, you leave your current 'mount' and take over the bad guy. You use him as you will, accepting all the damage he takes, when he dies, you take another bad guy.

Who cares if you have low hitpoints? They are not yours. Fail a Fort/Reflex save? So what - it ain't YOUR body.

AFAIK you will usually suffocate in a bag of holding. But one might ignore that (the spell says it leaves your body lifeless)... anyway. Being in a bag of holding is being on another plane. Magic Jar will not work across planes, and as such you can't use it from there (and if you posses some guy in your bag of holding and make him go outside, and someone succesfully casts Dispel Magic on him, you die. Just like that. Cause you're out of reach.).

I think it is clear that lifeless means no breathing required. I have never seen a lifeless body breathe, have you?

Magic Jar does not require line of sight to your body. But you do have to be in range so you are correct it risks your death on a Dispell Magic. So don't use the bag of holding trick if facing a spellcaster.

Besides there are other ways to carry the body around. But anyway it is a better spell than the other spells mentioned.

Just get yourself a heavy lead lined box. Give it an air hole or two to be safe, it should still grant total cover. Halfing/gnomish mages in particular do well like this, because their bodies are smaller and easier to carry.

I still find that 'trick' quite ridiculous, but by the looks of it, it could work. Guess it all depends on how you like to play :)

Maybe not the best, but I like Draconic Polymorph ;)

I don't know. I've only used Magic Jar once, and it was... unusual.

I took over the body of the Fighter who got his soul stolen by a Devourer. I used his body to good effect, and even cast some spells in that body (Empowered Greater Fireburst, Greater Blink + Spring Attack, etc...)...

Then again, I'm known for using spells in unconventional ways; I don't think I've ever had the same spell list as a Wizard on any two days...
I like surprising the DM and the party.

All the 5th-level spells of Lolth's domains:
Inflict Light Wounds, Mass
Dispel Good
False Vision

Baleful Polymorph (people especially hate being turned into squirrels)
Permanancy is tricky, but helpful. For example, want to always be able to understand all languages - written and spoken?
