I apologize in advance because I'm sure this has been done before. But I was wondering what everybody thought the absolute best forms (preferably 3.5 core) for alter self are. I'm going to break it down into different categories.

Combat: I believe it would be the trog.

Maneuverability: Surely something with flight but I'm coming up blank.

Stealth: Probably a kobold or goblin.

Thanks in advance.

Too bad the search function is down. There is a thread in the Character Optimization Board that has a list of useful forms to use with Alter Self.

For Combat: Lizard Folk. Nice boost to AC.

Maneuvarability: Avariels (winged elves) or Raptorans (Races of the Wild) for flying ability. I think there are other forms for burrow, climb and swim speed as well. Just can't think of any off the top of my head.

Stealth: I always liked using Alter Self just as if it were disguise self if you're trying to do some subterfuge. Change your human into an elf, dwarf, halfling or whatever. But for hiding and sneaking, any small humanoid could probably be useful just for the bonus to the Hide check for being small.

Are there any humanoid 3.5 forms with fly speeds, other than Raptorians?

Are there any humanoid 3.5 forms with fly speeds, other than Raptorians? If you're in FR, the avareol elves have wings. Other than that, none that I know of.

the Nycter, the bat-like creatures to which you are refferring, are monstrous humanoids.

the chameleon has the innate ability to alter itself as per the "alter self" does that mean it can sprout wings and fly because it looks like a raptoran?

Actually the ability "minor change shape" lets them mimic Disguise Self and not Alter Self. So it is purely cosmetic and will not grant stats, natural armor, natural attacks, or any racial traits.

he said chameleon, not changeling.

I just assumed he was talking about the race. Changelings from Races of Destiny don't get it as far as I know. Djinni did you mean does the normal animal "cameleon" get the abilty to grow wings? I don't know what sourcebook lists that animal but granting them unrestricted alter self would be a gross design error, as even minor change would be inapropriate for them. Animal cameleons should get a strong hide bonus or concealment and that's it.
