What do you feel like are the best "buffing" spells available in DnD 3.5?

Please consider: melee, offense, defense, duration, stat pumpers, everything.

I know the "Spell Compendium" and "Races" books have a lot of good things to offer a high level spellcaster/melee combatant...

I'm really curious to get insights from more experienced players.

I'd say haste. You get movement speed, a bonus to hit, AC, and reflex saves, and an extra attack at full attack. And this can affect a lot of people.

In my opinion, the "best" buffs are the ones that can affect more than one person.

Enlarge Person.

The increased reach alone makes it one cool buff.

The boost to damage, grapple, sunder, trip, and disarm are just gravy on top of that.

Yeah, Haste has got alot going for it.

If you're a Paladin or Cleric or Favoured Soul then Divine Favour is nice.

If you're a Cleric or Favoured Soul then Righteous Might

Others include Protection from >X<, Mage Armour, Shield of Faith and Bull's Strength

Imagine you were 20th level, could cast any spell in the book, and had to survive a multi-encounter dungeon all by yourself. Then what would you cast.

Shapechange, Greater Mage Armor, Resist Energy, Barkskin, etc?

Mass conviction is something every adventuring party should have on all the time in any dangerous area. It's a only a 3rd-level spell and lasts forever (10 min/level). At caster level 12, the bonus on saving throws goes up to +4. That can make a big difference.

Dolorous Blow and Divine Agility (SpC version) are nice.
Living Undeath can be particularly brutal.
Life's Grace gives plenty bang for your buck.
Greater Invisibility and Greater Blink are neat.

Well if your DM gets rid of spell components - like one of mine does - then Stoneskin becomes very useful....

Elemental Body

Bite of the Weretiger/bear

For Fighter types (esp. Monks) with a spellcaster dip, Fist of Stone (Complete Arcane) is great. Can't complain with +6 Str for a 1st level spell, even if it is only for 1 minute. Good for Kobolds doing the whole Rite of Draconic Passage thing or taking the Sorcerer Substitution level that gives you a SLA (at least until you can upgrade to a 2nd level SLA).

Don't forget greater mighty whallop.

my wizard has an empowerd greater mage armor and an empowered shield prepared by default. they are nice as personal buffs, but the best buffs are still polymorph and haste due to versatility

Greater Heroism: +4 morale bonus to attack rolls, saving throws, and skill checks; up to 20 temporary hp; immunity to fear. A +4 bonus to all of the above combined with the type of bonus makes it an incredible spell, since it will stack with just about anything, as there are very few spells, effects, or items that give morale bonuses, especially bonuses that high. This is especially true when there isnt a Bard in the party.

Chasing Perfection: +4 enhancement bonus to all ability scores (correct??..i dont own the Spell Compendium) seems extremely useful to me, especially when you are short on time for buffing the party and if you are a sorcerer and thus have limited spells known. Now if only it also allowed you to substitute it for any of the crafting prerequisites for items like gloves of dexterity or cloak of charisma, then I am sure it would be perfect.

Shapechange: Self explanatory..the ability to borrow any creatures physical ability scores, Supernatural, and Extraordinary abilities alone makes it one of the best buffs in the game...add in a 10 minute per level duraction and the ability to change form once per round and it gets even better.

Heroes feat could be worth it at higher lvs, when you are able to spare a 6th lv cleric slot. Immunity to fear/poison and misc bonuses are quite nice, and they last for 12 hours too(24 if you extend it).:)

Mindblank should be a staple at higher lvs(partly why I like the sorc, they get so many slots). Flat out immunity to enchantment effects(among other things).

Craft magic tattoo is not a bad spell as well, despite its annoying material component. It lasts for 24 hours(2 days if you extend it), so the 100gp cost doesn't seem to steep suddenly...+1 caster lv is always nice...

my wizard has an empowerd greater mage armor and an empowered shield prepared by default.

Fraid you can't empower those. You can, however, extend them.

My Favorite Buffs (that haven't been mentioned already):

Heart of Earth: It's like Stoneskin, only better. Lasts 1 Hr/Level, gives +8 to bull rushes, disarms, and trips, and temporary hp equal to twice your caster level. You can then expend it as a swift action to gain Stoneskin for 1 round per level. With no material cost. Level 4, Complete Mage. The other Heart spells are worth checking out as well.

Protection from X: Mini-mind blank, as well as bonuses to AC and a resistance bonus to saves. Evil is the popular choice, considering most PC's are, well...GOOD. Good spell to extend.

Tenser's Transformation: Who cares if you can't cast spells? Sometimes, you really need a melee presence.

Prismatic Sphere: Just read the spell.

Probably necrotic empowerment (Libris Mortis), offhand. I say that from the perspective of using Persistent Spell and Divine Metamagic, however.

The spells my players use the most are:

Multiple targets
Haste
Righteous Wrath of the Faithfull
Recitation
Prayer (at lower levels)
Mass Resist Energy
Mass Conviction (this is a killer one)

They usually have mass conviction and mass resist energy running very early in dungeon crawl situations and they usually last until they rest. The cleric usually starts fights using recitation or righteous might of the faithfull.

Single Target
Greater Enlarge
Greater Mage Armor
Dragonsight
Barkskin
Greater Resistance
Stoneskin

Stupid wizard casts greater enlarge on the fighter every single day... it makes my life as a DM so much harder. The most annoying one in the list is by far Dragonsight.

Pacts
Death Pact
Stalwart Pact

These are simply great. They don't look like much but they saved them more than once.

Luckly they haven't found brilliant blade yet which is another very good 'buff' spell against armored opponents, especially the multiple target version. My personal favourite buff is elemental body.

[Edit:] Changes a spell name that was wrong.

Agreed, both are amazing. I'd rank Alter Self the same (Crucian +8AC, Trog +6AC)

Mobility is good. Longstrider gives you +10' land movement, for hours. Alter Self will let you adopt a bunch of creature forms that have good mobility:

Varag (MM4): 60' base land speed
Black Scale Lizardfolk (MM3): only 40' land speed, but large size and +7 natural armor
Locathah: swim 60'
Asabi (MoF): land 50’, burrow 20’
Avariel (RoF): fly 50'
Mountain Spirit Folk (UE): climb 30’

3 must have buffs;
Death Ward
Freedom of Movement
Mind Blank

Enlarge Person.

The increased reach alone makes it one cool buff.

The boost to damage, grapple, sunder, trip, and disarm are just gravy on top of that.

The psionic version, Expansion, is even better. It can be augmented to enlarge you of 2 size categories. It makes the average human huge.

For the higher levels, an Extended or Persistant "Chasing Perfection".
Adds 4 to all stats. Got to be ba-ro-ken...

 I can't believe nobody mentioned these spells.

GHOSTFORM sor/wiz 8. (Spell Compendium)
You basically become a manifesting ghost with lots, LOTS of advantages.
Just read the description!!!!!

RAY DEFLECTION sor/wiz 4 . (Spell Compendium)
You become IMMUNE o_O to ALL ranged touch attacks , inclunding rays.
Just by using a 4 lvl spellslot.

GREATER DIMENTION DOOR (Spell Compendium) & DIMENSION JUMPER (Complete Mage) Sor/wiz 5
Nuke and teleport once x round. How cool is that?????

Righteous might is great for your party fighter if you have rings of spell storing to pass around.:)
The rage spell stacks with a barb rage, if you ever need an extra +2str/con.
Divine power(again, ring of spell storing) puts monks on par with fighters bab wise.
Divine favour is just awesome for its spell lv.
Which means (I think) it stops other good buffs, such as greater heroism.
Yeah, well, that is a drawback, but one I can live with.:)

It's not that great. Remember this:

Each spell has a caster level equal to the minimum level needed to cast that

Mage armor
Sheild
Polymorph
shapechange
Haste
Greater mighty wallop

Steal size
enlarge person

those are some pretty good ones.

It's not that great. Remember this:
Yeah, but divine power's main effect(bab = character lv) is independent of caster lv. It lasts for 7 minutes, combat will be long over by then.;) Solves the problem of TWFing rogues and monks having sub par BAB.:P

Yeah, well, that is a drawback, but one I can live with.

Of course. The spell is amazing. Too good, really. As if enchanters didn't have enough to worry about with undead, constructs, vermin, and the like.

On the other hand, some of the enchantment spells out of the Spell Compendium (such as final rebuke and wrathful castigation) are terrifying. So mind blank is more required than ever.

For the higher levels, an Extended or Persistant "Chasing Perfection".
Adds 4 to all stats. Got to be ba-ro-ken... Broken? I don't think so. A Persistent version of Chasing Perfection requires a 12th level spell slot, so it's not exactly cheap. And a single targeted Dispel Magic can wipe out all your buffs at once. Talk about putting all your eggs in one basket ...

Alter Self is a particularly useful ability if you already have decent ability scores.

"Why yes, I have a...(searches through list) +6 natural armor bonus. So you miss me.
TheCobra

11-17-06, 01:19 PM
Yeah, alter self is also great for getting racial skill bonus, such as from a Skulk.
El_Machinae

11-17-06, 01:48 PM
Polymorph any Object. It can be precast, and many 'base' forms are much more powerful than a normal race.

Mindblank.

They should modify the wizard class to say when you gain your first 8th level spell it will be mindblank. would be more honest

I'm a little surprised that nobody has mentioned Energy Immunity (Spell Compendium) yet. It gives the subject total immunity to one form of energy for a full 24 hours. It's a great candidate for Scribe Scroll, or you can even cast it the night before a dungeon crawl for free.
Shatteredtower

11-18-06, 11:51 AM
Chasing Perfection: +4 enhancement bonus to all ability scores (correct??..i dont own the Spell Compendium)Correct on the effect, and the cost of the material component is trivial by the level at which you could cast it, but it's in Player's Handbook II, not Spell Compendium.
