| Theregond the Mange09-28-05, 06:16 PM | Looking at the persistent spell feat. If I were to take it, any suggestions for spells that you would want to cast? |
| hoppy8109-28-05, 06:22 PM | Arcane Sight is pretty cool. |
| Theregond the Mange09-28-05, 06:27 PM | I can't see using any spells on the permanency list. Just seems a lot more effective to cast them permanent and pay the XP cost, rather than losing a slot everyday. |
| Jaid09-28-05, 07:14 PM | i hear wraithstrike makes a rather disgustingly good persistent spell. on that note, should you happen to be a rogue multiclass (or make heavy use of criticals), those spells that let you sneak attack contructs and undead would be nice too. |
| runestar09-28-05, 10:29 PM | A persistant lightning ring is always nice. The ability to discharge 2 5d6 lightning bolts as a free action each round for 24 hours is always welcome.... |
| Xanthia09-28-05, 11:14 PM | A persistant lightning ring is always nice. The ability to discharge 2 5d6 lightning bolts as a free action each round for 24 hours is always welcome....Lightning Ring? What is that from? |

| DarknessEternal09-29-05, 10:15 AM | Dischargable spells are not legal spells for use by Persistant Spell. Lightning Ring is one of those. |
| Vithar09-29-05, 08:51 PM | I use Divine Favor, Haste, Heroism, Shelter of Vitality |
| ninja109-29-05, 09:57 PM | Divine Favor Girallon's Blessing Fuse Arms Visage of the Deity, Lesser Divine Power Freedom of Movement Righteous Might Visage of the Deity Holy Star Visage of the Deity, Greater Feat: Divine Metamagic (persistant) Items: Lots of Nightsticks |
| Wrin77709-30-05, 12:46 PM | Good spells to persistant: Shield Argh! Don't go throwing Divine Metamagic into the mix...good grief, that feat is so broken it's sick. The Epic Level Handbook disallows more than 20 rounds of haste or 5 rounds of timestop per spell, but most people ignore it. I think it helps maintain game balance. (If you want to know where it does this, glance at the end of the Transport seed where it talks about using it to emulate haste and timestop style powers. Apparently exceeding the stated limits ejects you from your current reality/timestream. Coolness abounds.) Shield - Four points of armor class for twenty-four hours? Why not? Vigor {Lesser|Greater|Mass} - That's a lot of healing!! Alter Self - Wings, gills, disguises, etc. Heroism - +2 to attacks, skills, and saves..cool, but not incredible for 6th level. Shield of Faith - Good bonus to AC all day long Magic Circle Against {Good|Evil|Law|Chaos} - 7th level Mind Blank plus area and misc bonusses! Water Walk - Be Jesus...wow. Air Walk - Be cooler than Jesus...eh!? Divine Power - Be the fighter! Freedom of Movement - Ignore the dragon's grapple attempt...but not his breath or claws. True Seeing - This is just cool. At least the divine version is. Sleet Storm - This is kind of mean, really... Giant Vermin - A funny, oft-neglected option for the chaotic evil types Wall of Fire - When will it end!? Mwahahahaha! Call Lightning Storm - Umm...heehee.. BANG!! |
| Jonathan Strange09-30-05, 01:59 PM | I've got an wiz/incantratrix that has a 10th level slot open from the epic feat Increased Spell Capacity. With the Incanty's ability to drop metamagics by one, I believe I can Persist spells up to 5th level. I just havn't looked into what spells I might use that would really rock. Any ideas? |
| Merestil Haye09-30-05, 04:06 PM | Wrin777. I think you need to reread Persistent Spell, as a lot of these spells may not have Persistent Spell applied. Additionally, your comments read as if you are still playing 3.0, since you imply that Persistent Spell adds four levels to the spell slot. In 3.5, it adds six. You may not apply Persistent Spell to spells that are not "fixed range". Fixed range means spells that are Personal, or spells that radiate a fixed range from the caster. Shield is a good example of the former, while Detect Magic is a good example of the latter. Spells you have listed that are touch range includeAll the Vigor spells. Heroism Shield of Faith. Magic Circle Against {Good|Evil|Law|Chaos}. Water Walk Air Walk Freedom of Movement (This one is arguable because the range is given as "Self or Touch". I count all such spells as touch range.) True SeeingThen there are the spells that have a range other than Personal, like :-Sleet Storm Giant Vermin Wall of Fire Call Lightning StormMost of these have long range, but since that is not fixed, these spells cannot be persisted. That leaves...Shield Alter Self Divine PowerThe obvoius one for a cleric to add is Righteous Might. Of course you need either 11th level spell slots or Divine Metamagic to pull that off, but it's worth it. The problem with Persistent Spell is that there are so few things that it can be used on. Any spell with no fixed range, any insatantaneous spell, any spell that can be discharged (which rules out True Strike)... the list of spells it can be used with is quite slim. Intentionally, I suspect. |
| ninja109-30-05, 04:14 PM | Merestil Haye, you beat me to it. I was looking up the posted spells in the SRD and taking notes. By the time I got back to this, you had it all down! Kudos. :) On Freedom of Movement, I would take the side of the arguement for it. It is listed as "Personal or Touch" in the SRD. For Personal use, I would allow Persistant to apply. For Touch use, I would not allow it. |
| Theregond the Mange09-30-05, 04:30 PM | That was the conclusion that I came to also. It seems like a really cool power, but when I started looking for spells, it seemed like I would rather use magic items or permanent spells, rather than give up a 7th or higher spell slot. |
| Merestil Haye09-30-05, 04:33 PM | Ninja1. Thanks. I rule as I do because although it can be "Personal or Touch" you do not prepare versions with personal and Touch range separately, and therefore they do not ave a fixed range. I have to correct myself. The Mass Lesser Vigor and Vigorous Circle spells are fixed range and therefore eligible for Persistent Spell. Further, the FAQ rules state that Persistent Spell, unlike Extend Spell, does override the duration limit in the spell header. So add them to the list of spells that can be Persisted. Fast Healing 1 for 24 hours is not a bad deal. |
| Shaudes2910-01-05, 10:35 AM | how about devine favor and rightious might |

Fast Healing 1 for 24 hours is not a bad deal. Where does it say that in the FAQ? I could only find the entry relating solely to Extend Spell, and under that entry it would imply that the duration limit is not bypassable at all, even by Persisitent Spell. If you want fast healing, and an EXCELLENT spell to make Persistent, check out Monstrous Regeneration from Magic of Faerun (I think). Fast healing 4 and only non-lethal damage from anything except fire and acid....tasty. Ithandor |
| Lord shadow3510-01-05, 11:13 AM | i like to persisant death ward and freedom of movement. |
| Merestil Haye10-01-05, 01:45 PM | Where does it say that in the FAQ? I could only find the entry relating solely to Extend Spell, and under that entry it would imply that the duration limit is not bypassable at all, even by Persisitent Spell.Up to yesterday I would have said the same thing as you did about the duration. Then I found this. The mass lesser vigor spell has a fixed range (of 20 feet), which makes it eligible for the revised Persistent Spell feat in Player’s Guide to Faerûn. Does that mean a 17th-level druid could use a 9th-level spell slot to give nine creatures fast healing 1 for 24 hours, or does the built-in limit of 25 rounds make that pointless? Unlike Extend Spell, Persistent Spell replaces a spell’s normal duration with a new duration of 24 hours. In this case, the effect overrides the normal maximum duration of the spell, so it would indeed grant nine creatures fast healing 1 for 24 hours (a pretty reasonable effect for a 9th-level spell). It's on the last page or so of the section on Spells. As for Monstrous Regeneration, it's a Touch range spell, so ineligible for Persistent Spell. LordShadow35 : Death Ward is also a Touch range spell, and therefore you may not Persist it. Divine Favour, Divine Power and Righteous Might, on the other hand, are all candidates for Persistence. |
| Ryll10-02-05, 02:43 AM | 3.0 persistant was nice, but too powerful on some (few) spells... namely the divine three that made you way too powerful in melee way too early. Seems to me the wizard choices (fly persistant as a 7th level spell, see invis as 6th level spell, mage armor as a 5th, but why since you could just extend it and it would take 2 2nd level spells to last all day) didn't seem that overpowered... at 11th level, using one of your top spells, flying all day seems ok, when characters that level can have items that can do such things... Some of the divine spells, especially the 1 rnd/level spells got out of control, and the divine 3 that made you pretty amazing in combat broke down...so in 3.5 they raise the level adjustment to 6, this makes the spell fairly unuseable as now the minimum is 7th level spells for 1st level persistant, then the list of spells available is whacked to nearly non-existant. So now the spell is only good for divine metamagic...which still keeps the divine three as an abuseably powerful option, while anyone trying to use the feat realizes that by the time you can use the thing on your spells, they are fairly insignificant, and you give up too much. We houseruled it in 3.5 to a 5 level adjustment, and all the old spells still work with Persistant... it is quite playable, and preferable that way. |
| Lord shadow3510-02-05, 10:30 AM | Screw fly just use overland flight. It's lower level than a persistant fly. But persistant was better in 3.0. |
| sineous blackspell10-02-05, 03:24 PM | if you have improved metamagic at least 3 times and a 10 level slot persistant timestop (of course no dm in theyre right mind would allow such a thing) also persistant kiss of death is useful esp when shapechanging into things that like to bite |
