Best Explosive Spells [Archive] - Wizards Community

Blast of Flame 60ft Cone

Any other spells with bigger area of effect that allow a reflex save?

05-15-07, 04:22 PM Most people prefer the sphere of fireball, often because of grouping issues, a dislike of getting out in front, and shorter range..

If you allow Cone's to be Enlarged (normally this is illegal because the Cone normally has a set range instead of Close/Medium/Long), then Cone's start to look better than the sphere of fireball, at least after spending the metamagic to Enlarge them.

I think cones have to be Widened, as Enlarge doesn't work with fixed-ranged spells.

Anyway, a spell that's generally superior to Fireball is Ice Burst (Tome and Blood 91), a 3rd level spell that maxes out at 10d4+10 in a 30 ft. radius burst. Basically, it's a Fireball with the same average damage, a flatter damage curve, and 225% the area.

05-16-07, 04:20 PM Enlarged Dance of Ruin (BoVD p.90) Equivalent to a level 3 spell (5th after Explosive) that has a 50 ft. + 5/CL radius centered on you. Damage on it kinda sucks though.

Unfortunately, Explosive Spell can only be applied to a spell that allows reflex saves. Otherwise, this would be the most hilarious spell ever.

05-16-07, 05:23 PM A Born-of-the-Three-Thunders Spell (also from Complete Arcane) stuns creatures that fail a fort save, then knocks prone any that fail a reflex save.

It only works on Sonic or Electricity spells. I don't have my BoVD on me, but I do recall that Apocalypse from the sky deals damage of several energy types. Are either of those Sonic or Electricity?

05-21-07, 03:33 AM It's not technically legal but an explosive Blade Barrier really rocks! Explosive does not specify instantaneous spells and it is a reflex for half damage. Unfortunatly it is not a cylinder but a ringed wall. No longer will the barbarian "soak" the damage while running through it because it just chews him up and spits him out! If he lives then he can try again!

OK, fantasy is over.
