| Larz_Fang12-12-06, 02:29 AM | Ok, here's my question: What is the best spell to use when you want to completely nuke your enemies? And I mean from the official material, of course. Please leave homebrews out. |
| Sleepwalker1366612-12-06, 02:37 AM | I find the druid spell "Quill Blast" from complete divine to be utterly devastating. |
| IdleAltruism12-12-06, 02:51 AM | Force cage+dimensional anchor. It doesn't matter what nuke you have they'll eventualy die. |
| DM Zoc12-12-06, 04:17 AM | Fireball works really well, for what it is. I'd suggest a heavily meta-magicked one. |
| gullas12-12-06, 04:19 AM | you alllways have magic missile:P |
| Gahread12-12-06, 04:29 AM | This question was answered quite thoroughly in the CharOp forums. If you want to 'completely nuke your enemies' and leave a 400-mile wide crater, your best bet is Apocolypse From the Sky, Explosive metamagic, and mitigating factors to bring the spell level back down from 11 as far as possible. Oh, and make sure you're a dweomerkeeper to ignore the major artifact material component requirement. |
| Ashheart12-12-06, 05:43 AM | OK that is a nice one but I think this best Nuke were looking for should be something that can be used often, and AftS is a very high level spell with a high component cost (unless your a dweomerkeeper). Personaly I'll go for Dance of Ruin from Book of Vile Darkness anyday and our good old Fireball can be a great Nuke with the right metamagic uses. Also A Spell Weaver (for MM2) can unlease a huge amout of punishment with magic missiles (as gullas said) and all in one round. |
| itwasntme12-12-06, 05:46 AM | you alllways have magic missile:P second |
| runestar12-12-06, 08:22 AM | Does epic spellcasting count?:P |
| frankiemulder12-12-06, 08:35 AM | Technically Meteor Swarm is the Best Simple in term of raw power since as an area spell is rather potent dealing 24d6 fire damage in a very huge area(not counting the 2d6 bludgeoning spheres), as a single target spell it's utterly monstrous since if you are really bent on destroying a particular creature you just need to make a ranged touch attack and voilà it get's no saving throw against the fire damage. Coupled with the Energy Substitution Feat it can spell certain doom for most creatures(or an entire army). Any Sorcerer would probably pick it up as their 9th lvl spell (along with Time stop) if they enjoy being a ranged mass murder machine. |
| Necromas12-12-06, 08:56 AM | Although not technically a spell, fivefold breath of tiamat is the most raw d6's of damage I've seen without using metamagic. 45d6 damage of various elements, and all of it AOE (2 lines and 3 cones I think). |
| angryman12-12-06, 09:01 AM | Maximised Disintegrate. Repeat Destruction. (with divine MM) My personal favourite, Quickened Ray of Enfeeblement followed by Waves of Exhaustion. If that doesn't work... Quickened Evervation followed by Energy Drain. Take 1d4 + 2d4 negative levels. Between 2-12 levels, gone. |
| Ian Demagi12-12-06, 09:08 AM | Horrid Wilting-gets around all those evasion carrying rogues & monks. Ian. |
| Silverclaw12-12-06, 09:08 AM | at low levels Scorching rays deals a nasty amount of damage:D but when talking wery high lewel spells you might be able to do some vile stuff with a litle WISH:evillaugh :evillaugh but the Meteor swarm surely are great:mage: |
| Qube12-12-06, 09:09 AM | greater metamagic rod of quicking (DMG), greater metamagic rod of maximizing (DMG), sudden maximize (complete arcane) sudden empower (complete arcane) (1) metarod-maxed sudden-empowered meteor swarm (st ac) (2) drop rod (free ac) <- need hand for somatic component (3) draw quick-metarod (move action) (4) metarod-quickened sudden-maxed meteor swarm (swift ac) 315 fire damage (best to change energy to acid.) |
| MarrowMage12-12-06, 10:02 AM | well how about a quickened, twinned, energy admixed, intensified, repeat meteor swarm followed by another one minus the quicken, then in the next round repeat the same process minus the repeat metamagic...assuming you admix it with more fire that's approximately.... 6912 fire damage in two rounds :evillaugh |
| frankiemulder12-12-06, 10:40 AM | double post, sorry |
| Ian Demagi12-12-06, 10:48 AM | "well how about a quickened, twinned, energy admixed, intensified, repeat meteor swarm" First Question: Where are you getting the 13 level spell slot for the twinning part? |
| CantripN12-12-06, 10:49 AM | "well how about a quickened, twinned, energy admixed, intensified, repeat meteor swarm" First Question: Where are you getting the 13 level spell slot for the twinning part? To get Intensify Spell, he'd have to be Epic, anyhow (13th level spell slots via feats, Easy Metamagic). Also, Incantatrix & Rods. |
| Norhg12-12-06, 10:50 AM | Finger of Death? Dominate Monster? Bigby's Hand Spells? Anything that takes people out when they fail a check/save? Power Word Stun/Blind? Anything that takes people out without a check/save? |
| CantripN12-12-06, 10:53 AM | Finger of Death? Dominate Monster? Bigby's Hand Spells? Anything that takes people out when they fail a check/save? Power Word Stun/Blind? Anything that takes people out without a check/save? A nuke is usually defined as a AOE spell. Finger of Death, no. Finger of Death, Chained, yes. |
| Bladegeek12-12-06, 11:51 AM | Sudden maxed meteor swarm is always a good one. If you want a nuke spell without the work cast Summon Elemental Monolith. Summon an Earth Elemental monolith and what the beating start. 476 HP +55 to hit and almost unstoppable. Who cares if about energy immunities etc when you are beaten to death? |
| Radagast12-12-06, 12:13 PM | Obedient Avalanche from the Spell Compendium is pretty rough, too. A good deal of damage and being buried alive can be "game over" for foes who survived the damage dealt. I though there was a spell called "Iceberg" from another book that dropped an iceberg on people. Sounds painful... Some other nasty things like in that book as well: Tsunami comes to mind... there's level 8 spell that is something like Ice Razor Field or something (has a picture of Centaurs being destroyed by it) that deals a nasty amount of damage (20d6, I think), the shape can be controlled, and I think it slows or has some other negative effect on its victims. |
| mvincent12-12-06, 12:29 PM | At mid-levels I'm partial to a symbol of sleep (created with DC buffs if possible). A 120' wide save-or-'die' effect can certainly clear out a battle-field (and doesn't take up any spell-slots once made). |
| Psionx12-12-06, 12:31 PM | find some rocks, permanencied shrink item the largest amount u can hurl with telekinesis and store em somewhere. Retrieve, chuck with telekinesis and speak the command word. Rocks are chucked, every1 dies. |
| Nyat12-12-06, 02:06 PM | For 9th level spells I prefer Iceberg over Meteor Swarm but thats probably just because I like the mental image of dropping an iceberg on my foes. |
| aziraphale6012-12-06, 03:14 PM | For 9th level spells I prefer Iceberg over Meteor Swarm but thats probably just because I like the mental image of dropping an iceberg on my foes. there's also that whole no save within a 20ft radius thing. |
| ZomB12-12-06, 04:28 PM | I would say what is the best feat to use with a spell to Nuke? Which is probably Sudden Maximize (complete arcane). Then the spell depends on your level. 2 Scorching Ray 3 Fireball 4 Either Blistering Radiance or Black Tentacles + a wall spell OR an orb spell |
| Nezkrul12-12-06, 05:35 PM | sudden maximized sudden empowered Maw of Chaos (Spell Compendium) Abjuration's most potent kill spell, and my favorite one to boot! :D |
| angryman12-12-06, 10:02 PM | Damn, I forgot, Reality Maelstrom. God I live that spell. Every time I use it (and I usually use it once per session on average), the whole party holds their breath. The thing is, it's never harmed the party. |
| Magetastic12-12-06, 10:43 PM | well... i was saving this for the spell abuse competition but that thread is SO slow Pocket Impaler/Crusher what you will need:an adamantite caltrop, craft contingent spell, extra spell (gaint size), animate objects, permanency. Step 1: animate and permanisize the caltrop Step 2: Give him a cute name like spiney Step 3: Now that the caltrop is a creature you can craft contingent spell on him give him gaint size triggered when it touchs an enemy. Step 4: Either toss the caltrop at an enemy or set it as a trap Result: Need i tell you what happens when a tiny adamantite spikey ball grows to gargantuan or larger size instantly right next to an enemy? Its like the feather token trick but 1000 times worse. |
| Deekin12-12-06, 10:50 PM | Psionic power :Tornadow Blade Tornado Blast Psychokinesis Level: Kineticist 9 Display: Auditory and visual; see text Manifesting Time: 1 round Range: Long (400 ft. + 40 ft./level) Area: 40-ft.-radius spread Duration: Instantaneous Saving Throw: Reflex half; see text Power Resistance: No Power Points: 17 You induce the formation of a slender vortex of fiercely swirling air. When you manifest it, a vortex of air visibly and audibly snakes out from your outstretched hand. If you want to aim the vortex at a specific creature, you can make a ranged touch attack to strike the creature. If you succeed, direct contact with the vortex deals 8d6 points of damage to the creature (no save). Regardless of whether your ranged touch attack hits (and even if you forgo the attack), all creatures in the area (including the one possibly damaged by direct contact) are picked up and violently dashed about, dealing 17d6 points of damage to each one. Creatures that make a successful Reflex save take half damage. After being dashed about, each creature that was affected finds itself situated in a new space 1d4 × 10 feet away from its original space in a random direction. Walls and other barriers can restrict this relocation; in such a case, the creature ends up adjacent to the barrier. Augment For every additional power point you spend, this power’s area damage (not the damage from direct contact dealt to a specific creature) increases by 1d6 points (to a maximum of 24d6 points). For each extra 2d6 points of damage, this power’s save DC increases by 1. |
| Tyrf_Halden12-12-06, 11:03 PM | Damn, I forgot, Reality Maelstrom. God I live that spell. Every time I use it (and I usually use it once per session on average), the whole party holds their breath. The thing is, it's never harmed the party. Where is that? |
| Nyat12-12-06, 11:10 PM | Where is that? It was originally in The Manual of the Planes, I believe it was reprinted and made worse in the Spell Compendium |
| Qube12-13-06, 02:08 AM | greater metamagic rod of quicking (DMG), greater metamagic rod of maximizing (DMG), sudden maximize (complete arcane) sudden empower (complete arcane) (1) metarod-maxed sudden-empowered meteor swarm (st ac) (2) drop rod (free ac) <- need hand for somatic component (3) draw quick-metarod (move action) (4) metarod-quickened sudden-maxed meteor swarm (swift ac) 315 fire damage (best to change energy to acid.) arcane thesis (PHB2): for 1 spell: all metamagic exept heighten 'costs' 1 less level blistering spell (PHB2): adds 2 damage per spell level to a firespell; adds 1 level 2 meteor swarms -> 2 lvl 9 spells 2x (9x2) = 36 so PHB2/complete arcane/core: 351 damage does anyone else know some nice +1 metamagic? :schemes: |
| Nyat12-13-06, 02:21 AM | arcane thesis (PHB2): for 1 spell: all metamagic exept heighten 'costs' 1 less level blistering spell (PHB2): adds 2 damage per casterlevel to a firespell; adds 1 level 2 meteor swarms -> 2 blistering meteor swarms at lvl 20 2x (20x2) = 80 so PHB2/complete arcane/core: 385 damage does anyone else know some nice +1 metamagic? :schemes: Blistering spell does not deal +2 damage per caster level, it deals +2 damage per level of the spell (in this case a 9th level spell so 18 extra damage per casting) |
| angryman12-13-06, 10:02 AM | It was originally in The Manual of the Planes, I believe it was reprinted and made worse in the Spell Compendium I don't know about the SC one, but the MotP spell was (iirc) 20' radius per level, (huge radius) Ref save or be pulled into the core of the maelstrom, if you fail the Ref save, you're pulled into another random plane on a failed Will save. |
| mvincent12-13-06, 11:27 AM | 1. Scry on opponents 2. Buff 3. Shape change into a choker 4. Cast maximized timestop (using metamagic rod) 5. Teleport in 6. Cast 8 maximized delayed blast fireballs and 4 quickened delayed blast fireballs (using metamagic rods and energy substitution if needed) 7. Contingency-teleport out (or shapechange into a balor and stick around to watch the fireworks). |
| wookibus12-13-06, 12:13 PM | Fire Brand from the Spell Compendium. It is basically a fireball, but you choose a 5ft square/level and it does up to 10d6 the first round, and if the enemy is hit in the first round by it, or one walks into its area of effect, then they have take 5d6. So it really does max 15d6 to all the enemies and there is no consequence of hitting your party like the regular fireball. Not bad for a fifth level spell. |
| Iver Gearsham12-13-06, 07:55 PM | Magic Jar Have a set of bugs glued onto rocks laid out in a pattern Jump into a Bug cast Maximised Death Throws while in the bug an assistant removes first bug jump out of that bug into another repeat as many times as you can. Jump back to your body put the bugs in a small box go to your battle open box and TK violent thrust the bugs at your foes. Each bug gets crushed on impact dieing and exploding in a 20 ft. radius with no Save no SR doing 8 x lvl in damage for a 20 lvl caster it would be 160 per bug times 15 or 2400 points of damage |
| NightBreeze12-13-06, 10:48 PM | Chained Sudden-Maximized Moonbow (if chain works with it, i don't recall the rules): thats...umm....240 points to 1 target and 120 points to 20 other targets, no save , just a ranged touch. |
| GraveDigger01-05-07, 10:58 AM | If your epic level enough to have Multispell I suggest using several metamagic meteor swarms.. I think my lvl 36 sorcerer with time stop can drop like 5-10 in a round.. Yes I have a sickening charisma modifier that gives me 13 bonus spell uses to all levels. |
| Kimokeo01-05-07, 11:59 AM | Wall of Thorns followed by Summon Elder Earth Elemental. Chain Acid Splash |
| Qube01-05-07, 05:15 PM | If your epic level enough to have Multispell I suggest using several metamagic meteor swarms.. I think my lvl 36 sorcerer with time stop can drop like 5-10 in a round.. Yes I have a sickening charisma modifier that gives me 13 bonus spell uses to all levels. their is a epic feat (or their was in 3.0) if a certain spell was cast not far from you, it is also cast on you. guess what happens if all 3 epic wizards of the party have this feat with 'time stop' and start casting it. :D |
| Witchcraft01-05-07, 06:50 PM | Enlarged, maximized, and empowered Explosive Runes. Put it into a a box and give to your baddies. They open it and BOOOOOOOM. :-P Good times, good times....... ~~Witchcraft~~ |
| itwasntme01-05-07, 07:02 PM | i just got back from holly days and dount feel like reading eveything first are we talking about 1 target or more then 1 target? plz dount make me work and read eveything/starting topic fully plz? ^^ |
| Qube01-06-07, 02:14 AM | (3.0 psion) lvl 9 power: true telekinesis: 500 lb per level; as telekinisis (1d6 / 25 lb  ) that's 20d6/level, but needs attack (use int instead of str/dex) (not touch attack) either way: sleeping enemies coup the grace? thats 1 lvl9 spell, 1 book, no special classes or stuff, no items, lvl 20: 400d6. thats enough to kill a great red wyrm in 1 hit (potion of true strike(+20) + 10 BAB+ 5 int +1d20 roll to hit AC 41) |
| Bopple01-06-07, 01:09 PM | If multi-metamagicked spells, epic spells, or Vile/Exalted spells are to be excluded, I'd say Mycontil's Last Resort [Shining South] and Erupt [Serpent Kingdom]. |
| Prak, the Mad01-08-07, 01:26 AM | well... I've always like Exalted Fury, when cast by a 27th pal. average damage is between 190 and 298 to all evil creatures, but then he dies(sacrifice for an exalted spell) an average 36th level paladin could cast an explosive, repeated, empowered Exalted Fury and do 1380 to 1548 damage in the two turns of cast, repeat... assuming the spell can be repeated... |
| Qube01-08-07, 02:03 AM | an average 36th level paladin could cast an explosive, repeated, empowered Exalted Fury and do 1380 to 1548 damage in the two turns of cast, repeat... assuming the spell can be repeated... whel thats not much for lvl 36: try: improved metamagic feat (x3), enhance spell (x2), impr spell capability (x4) fireball (10d6) enhance (lvl4)(20d6) enhance (lvl5) (30d6) quicken (lvl 6) (free action 30d6) 'epic variant from maximize (max x2)' (lvl10) (free action 360) repeat (lvl 11) (free action 720) energy admixture (lvl 12) (free action 1440) empower(lvl13) (free action 2160) |
| Yokomohoyo01-08-07, 02:08 AM | if you time stop then just cast delayed fireball for the 1d4 rounds (depending of how many rounds you get in the time stop you can cast upto 4 delayed fireballs and place them to explode at the round the time stop ends all around your target and get out of hte blast area) wich deal up to 20d6 each. |
| Qube01-08-07, 02:23 AM | if you time stop then just cast delayed fireball for the 1d4 rounds (depending of how many rounds you get in the time stop you can cast upto 4 delayed fireballs and place them to explode at the round the time stop ends all around your target and get out of hte blast area) wich deal up to 20d6 each. delayed blast fireball = lvl 8 spell for 20d6 deleyed metamagic (+4, impr metamagicX3 -> +1) enhanced (20d6 damage cap; same spell level modifier): same effect as delayed blast fireball, but lvl 5 spell |
| Yokomohoyo01-08-07, 03:49 AM | hadnt noticed that.... mmmm just might do it for my next char muahahahahaha thanks ^_^ |
