| Schwarg06-23-04, 01:48 PM | I wanted to start a thread requesting magic items for rogues. I'm in a current campaign in which an item was to be awarded to a rogue. What would a good one be? He's 4th level.... It should be good though..... What was considered and probably high on the value side was a scabbard of keen edges but that seems more for a heavy damage dealer. What would you suggest? boots of speed, clook of elvenkind, etc. I was thinking of something off the beaten path. The suggestion of the most unique cool item get's my most kindest regards. -Schwarg |

I am of the school that does not allow more than half the maximum character wealth tied to a single item. So, this leaves 2,700gp for one item. I would go with a rapier +1; and brooch of prestidigitation usable 3 times per day. |
| Seeker9506-23-04, 02:29 PM | Although, if you skip the rapier, you can get a full blown ring of silence usable once a day. A very nice item as long as you don't practice your trade too many times each day! |

All of my rogues who have been even slightly into breaking the law have had one. if you get seen at low levels, then 99% plus of the time, they will not have true sight active. This means an escape leaves you off the hook, and if you were careful in choosing your appearance, could leave someone else in trouble, at least for a while. :smirk: Apart from that, I'd say a set of thieves tools enchanted for a few pluses might be appropriate, and a scarab of golembane: all might be a LOT more useful than you would think, though the low level kind of means a golem would win a fight anyway. Maybe a ring of invisibility 1/day, or to save players getting it mixed up with a normal ring of invisibility, an amulet/cloak/vest/jockstrap. |
| Jaques06-23-04, 06:21 PM | something offering invisibility would be very nice. i've always been partial to the boots/cloak of elvenkind [especially if you houserule them back to 2e - haha]. I like the idea of something golembane or the like - to give you an edge over monsters that rogues otherwise have trouble with. just last night, out 14th level party was facing an iron golem and I (the rogue) and our wizard (who had not prepared spells in anticipation of a golem) were both reduced to standing by as the samurai slowly chipped away at it. Another item I've always loved is the immovable rod. Or rather, several immovable rods [why they give the option of having only one is beyond me]. I know this way above reasonable for a 4th lvl character (if you go by the price), but you may want to consider it any way. Several characters I've seen have mad really wonderful use of these puppies: everything from handy ladder or door jam to sniper's perch to (my personal favorite) quick makeshit trap while being chased in the dark - just reach back, hit that button and run on (optional - tie a knife to it first). |
| Thraxious06-24-04, 02:03 AM | I guess the item would depend alot on what type of rogue you are dealing with. For example, if he is the kind that has improved feint, and tries to bluff in combat all the time. A Brooch of Bluff +5 would be a signifigant item, especially at lower levels. (I picked brooch for the item due to body slot affinity.. I figure Bluff would fall under 'discernment'). A sneaky rogue... well the cloak/boots of elvenkind.. or maybe the slippers of spider climb (trouble getting into position for the flank to sneak attack?.. try the ceiling, usually less of a crowd ;) ) Or... a Ring of Darkvision 1/day? Save you from having light give away your presence when sneaking around..(spell is measured in hours so at normal it would last 3hrs). On the more boring side, IMO, you could have a rope of climbing.. useful for a rogue, and likely his whole group. Or a Heward's Handy Haversack... do not have to worry about where to stick your loot. Prices I think would be.. Brooch of Bluff +5, Cloak or Boots of E-Kind- 2500 gp ea. Slipper of Spider Climb - 4800 gp (bit on the high side for his level) Ring of Darkvision 1/day - 2160 gp (command word actv) Rope of Climbing - 3000gp Heward's Handy Haversack - 2000 gp They are all under 5400... so I guess any of those might work. |
