| StruckingFuggle01-22-07, 06:54 PM | I've seen lists around for "best spells to have in your spellbook" or "have prepared on an average day", but nothing quite like this, so ... another "best spells?" question: Assuming you're part of a fairly normal party, for both wizards & clerics, as well as rogues, what wands and scrolls are the best to carry around? |
| Milo HoBo01-22-07, 06:59 PM | Wand of Lesser Restoration Wand of Cure Light Wounds Scroll of Restoration Scroll of Teleport Wand of Identify (specially made from a Cleric w/ the Oracle Domain) Scroll of Dementional Lock That should be a good start. |
| Seeker9501-22-07, 08:27 PM | For scrolls: every spell you do not need every day. For wands: every spell you need every day. |
| Max the Immortal01-23-07, 04:55 AM | Enervation is a good spell to put into a wand, because it's still a useful combat spell at high levels (when level 4 wands are affordable), especially when you can spam it from a wand. Against foes without spell resistance, you don't even have to pay for a caster level higher than 7. |
| runestar01-23-07, 07:41 AM | I guess you will want spells which are not so reliant on caster lv or save dc. Like enervation, ice-storm, stoneskin...choose spells you know you will be casting on a regular basis to take advantage of the 40% discount for bulk purchase.:) As for scrolls, its probably more for silver-bullet spells which you feel you will not be using that often, but are nonetheless invaluable in the few specific scenarios which do warrant their use. Teleport, forcecage, shadow walk... |
| TheGogmagog01-23-07, 08:30 AM | I've collected a few lists, but all I can find is the cleric. There are tons of wizard utility spells that come in handy, like knock or silent image. I would almost always opt for 1-2 scrolls, replace them or increase the quantity as needed. The gp investment will cost a smaller potion of your character wealth each time. The only spells I would consider in a wand are invisibility or fly, so you can hit the whole party (even then a mass spell might be a better deal now they exist). I would also add snakes swiftness or mass snakes swiftness to that list. Hmm, this isn't the scroll list, but isn't a bad list for general undead use. This seems like alot but really it's fairly cheap 1. Scroll of Freedom of Movement (Cost 700 GP Divine) 2. Scroll of Deathward ( Cost 700 GP Divine) 3.a. Weapon of Disruption (Spell) DC14 or destroyed (1/20) 3.b. Scrolls of sunbeam (2,275) 3.c. Scrolls of Sunburst(3,000) 3.d. Scrolls of Undeath to Death (2,275?) *Note the 3.5 changes. 3.e. Scroll of Mass Heal (No attack roll) Followed with Magic Missile 4. Magic circle of protection from Evil (Cost 375 GP Divine) 5. Silversheen (Cost 250 GP) 6. Scroll of Anti-Magic Field (Cost 1,650 Arcane) TOTAL COST= 21,650 GP |
| TheGogmagog01-23-07, 08:36 AM | For scrolls: every spell you do not need every day. For wands: every spell you need every day. I disagree, there are tons of spells you don't want on scroll or wand. 1st level srcrolls that are round/level are worthless, any spell with a save is worthless. The only time I would make a wand is if you need more than what you can memorize in a day. ie. You would likely need to hit the whole party with invisibility, fly, levitate, freedom of movement, deathward etc... Even then the mass spells and/or the metemagic rod of chaining would fix that. |
| Nom01-23-07, 08:51 AM | For both: ... and that you don't overly care about CL or save DC. Scrolls are used in preference to wands if you can't afford a wand or if the spell is higher than level 4. Or if you don't have Craft Wand and can't buy the wand directly. It's generally safe to put stuff like enlarge person and cure light wounds into wands, since the per-CL benefit is small. Attack spells should rarely go in wands (but a high-CL magic missile might almost be worth it "just in case"). |
| tarkin01-23-07, 11:58 AM | Certain spells are amazingly good in wands. Wand of Reduce Person is a fantastic item, if used in combination with other things. For example, any person that owns Ring Gates should definitely invest in a Wand of Reduce Person. |
