What are good spells to take to craft magic items with? What ones make the best items?

I'm thinking mainly Wonderous Items but possibly Weapons/Armour as well (obviously wands is any spell)

On a side note do you need to be able to craft the weapons/armour to make it magical? It is not clear.

What are good spells to take to craft magic items with?Whatever spell is necessary to accomplish the objective you have set for yourself.

On a side note do you need to be able to craft the weapons/armour to make it magical? No. You just need the weapon or armor in your possession, and it must be masterwork.

I thought so.

But what spells make the best/most useful items??

Depends entirely on what you want to make. Asking a question like that is like trying to ask what's the best method to organizing a CD collection. The exception to this being scrolls, wands, potions, and to a lesser extend rods and staves. Since those items generally use the spell or spells (in the case of rods and staves) they produce. Just look over the things you want to make and make a note of their caster levels and spell requirements.

But what spells make the best/most useful items??You're starting at the wrong end of the process.

What items do *you* find most useful?
From there, determine what spells would be used to make them.

What seeker said. It really depends on your character concept. The items a rogue would find usefull will be very different from a warrior's first choice.

That being said, what type of character are you playing?

It almost sounds like you are a sorceror trying to go into item creation ... which is a very bad idea.

Hey, how about I answer your question by actually answering it. My view is to get into items those spells that do not really improve much or not at all with level but are really useful to have for just in case. Divination spells are definitly a must for. Read magic, detect (various types), identify, and other similar spells on an item and able to use a few times a day will keep you from wasting valuable spell slots on those spells and be ready every day for you. Various cantrips are useful too, take the mage hand as an example. An item that allows prestidigitation a few times a day can be extremely useful in roleplay situations. Boots with expiditious retreat (permanent effect) is another good one to make. Be like boots of striding and springing, but without the springing and using the better expeditious retreat spell. Fighter classes will love you for it. Items with enlarge person on em for your fighters to use a couple of times a day work. great too. Basically, for me, the philosophy is to put into items the spells I'd love to cast but really don't want to waste a good spell slot on.

On whether you need to craft armor or weapon itself. No, you don't need the crafting skills to make the armor or weapon. You can just buy masterwork quality stuff and enchant that. You can save yourself a little bit of gold though if you make it yourself. The only thing that you need to provide (if you are enchanting the item) is the crafting feat. You can have others provide the rest of the materials, even spells, but you have to have the feat and spend the exp.

Actually, anyone involved in the creation can spend the XP, not just the person with the feat.

Actually, anyone involved in the creation can spend the XP, not just the person with the feat.Just adding that technically any one involved can expend the xp, although I have seen DMs who permit sharing the xp cost with any and all who want to contribute it.

smrtgmp is right. I was just re-emphasizing the "one" part of "anyone".
