| hand over fist03-18-04, 02:03 PM | What are the best ways to deal with being hit with a spell that causes blindness? What spells work the best to solve this combat headache? PS, i am a sorcerer 7th lvl. Many times I'm flying when my DM hits me with these types of spells causng me grief! Also, with so many people thinking that Solid Fog is a must have for sorcerers, can I see thru the fog as the caster? If I get that spell and cast it into an aera, are there any other spells that I can cast to help aid Myself or my party see the enemy within the fog? Are there any bat-like sonar spells out there?...... Thanks |
| Goreg Skullcrusher03-18-04, 02:19 PM | If you're talking about the actual Blindness condition, I recommend a Prayer Bead of Healing. It costs 9000 gp, but once per day you can either Cure Serious Wounds, Remove Disease, or Remove Blindness/Deafness. Plus, it gives you that tingly Paladin feel. :D |
| hand over fist03-18-04, 02:34 PM | no...not really. The other day a cleric hit me with a spell(not sure what spell) but I failed a save and was blinded for 6 rounds. I was flying but could not find the cleric below. It was a death sentence. |

| hand over fist03-18-04, 02:42 PM | the spell was not affecting the aera...it was affecting me. If I flew up 900 feet I was still going to be blind for 6-ish rounds. |
| fruits and vegetables03-18-04, 02:43 PM | 2nd level spell in Savage Species called Blindsight. If that seems too powerful for such a low level then use the one in Magic of Faerun by the same name, it is 3rd level. It is a lot more potent than just seeing while blind. Unless someone is silenced with the silence spell then there is no chance they will hide and sneak up on you either. |

Did you read my entire post? a round or two and you should be out of their range ... So you can't see ... so what?? They can't affect you with anything ... so what's the big deal?? (yeah, ok, maybe they have fly as well and come after you .. but if you keep doing x4 moves (flys) in a direction you essentially know is "away" from them ... they're going to have a hard time catching up to you ... they have to make a x4 move as well .. but then can't cast anything ... "unless quickened, I guess ... " But at least you're limiting their options!! |

Originally posted by hand over fist What are the best ways to deal with being hit with a spell that causes blindness? The solution to your problem is a little thing called Dispel Magic. You could also buy a Dagger +1 spellblade:blindness/deafness, which makes you immune to that one spell for 8000gp. Forgotten Realms Underdark has both the blindsight and blindsense spells. You could go invisibile, and then being blind doesn't matter because neither of you can see the other. Also, consider for a moment why your DM is being so antogonistic towards you. I think you two have some aggression issues that need to be worked out. |

| Goreg Skullcrusher03-19-04, 11:09 AM | Prayer Beads can only be used by a divine spellcaster. The Prayer Beads of Karma, Smiting et al can only be used by a divine caster. Anyone may use the Prayer Bead of Healing. It's in the description. |

Once that occurs, the owner instantly knows the powers of the prayer beads and how to activate them. " I don't see where in the description it says anyone can use a bead of healing. I DO see this excerpt that says it takes a divine spellcaster to activate ANY of the beads. |

Note the absense of any restriction on the bead of healing. |
| Goreg Skullcrusher03-19-04, 12:19 PM | Dangit Seeker, I was all set and ready to throw that quote and be all smug about it, and you came and took away my fun. :D |
| Seeker9503-19-04, 12:21 PM | Goreg, I could delete the post and let you do it instead. :P |
| Everach03-19-04, 02:12 PM | Originally posted by Seeker95 Note the absense of any restriction on the bead of healing. | Goreg Skullcrusher03-19-04, 02:24 PM | This item appears to be a normal string of prayer beads until the owner casts a divine spell. Once that occurs, the owner instantly knows the powers of the prayer beads and how to activate them. Each strand includes two or more special beads, each with a different magic power. Look at it carefully. It doesn't say "Only a divine caster may activate it", it says "A divine caster instantly knows of the benefits and activation method". No where does it say that this is the only means of discovering the activation method. This means that a Wizard can simply Identify the Beads and enjoy the same benefits as the divine caster. (The Bead of Healing, that is) |
| Seeker9503-19-04, 02:51 PM | I am the fighter. I find this item. I hand it to the cleric. The cleric casts a cure light wounds spell on me. Wa-laa! Instant identification. The cleric uses the other beads (except the bead of summoning. Then the cleric hands the necklace with the bead of healing back to me. He instructs me: Use this on me if I go down. |
| Dowanroden03-19-04, 03:01 PM | And here I was about to go off suggesting getting Blindfight then pour a buttload of points into Wisdom then get Blindsight... but if all it was was a spell effect then yeah, all you really had to do was head in the direction you remembered as being away from the ground. Should be easy if you were doing the pompous thing of flying while 'standing'. Now if you were, say, flying in a large cave then I can see how up is bad but in an open field the sky's the limit. |
| Everach03-19-04, 03:06 PM | Originally posted by Goreg Skullcrusher Look at it carefully. I bow down to your superior vision and clarity. Clearly, I am wrong. Whoa is me. Back to the whole point of this thread, use dispel magic to undo the blindness. And stop upsetting your DM. He's being antagonistic. Much like my current relationship with Seeker and Goreg :) |
| fruits and vegetables03-19-04, 03:07 PM | I wonder..... Could you apply the rules for getting lost to someone that is blindly flying around? How would they know which way is up or not after a while? Not that it would do much damage to "fly" straight into the ground versus "falling" into the ground. It would however be extremely funny. |
| Dowanroden03-19-04, 03:39 PM | Actually flying full tilt into the ground would hurt just as much as if he fell. Probably what he was talking about with the whole 'death sentence' thing. But really if you fly and feel the air get colder and thinner then how can you not tell you're going up? |
| fruits and vegetables03-19-04, 03:59 PM | True i guess. That is assuming the weather is picture perfect on the ground though. That is also assuming the material plane you are in is like the real world (which i usually do btw). I do not think it will hurt as much to fly into the ground. It would depend on your speed i think. It is not really fall damage. It is more like an extremely fast slowfall spell. Unless your fly speed is something like 150 feet per second (or 900 feet per round) i think falling will hurt more. |
