| cowdragon10-30-05, 01:11 PM | I just looked at this spell in HoH. I was so excited to see an updated version for 3.5 finally. I read it. I almost cried. It's a touch spell...with a save?!? WTF? It also has a very costly material component for a level one spell that at level one can heal...dum,dum,DUM...1 hit point of damge!!! That is of course if the goblin doesn't save. Not for half mind you...Fort negates. I just don't get it!!! Really, truly, frightfully upsetting. :weep: My group will simply rewrite it with no costly component and no save...or at most a save for half. Otherwise, so far HoH seems to rock! | smrtgmp10-30-05, 02:42 PM | I was dissapointed with it as well. I'm taking tomb tainted soul with my dread necro so that I can heal myself with my charnal touch. |
| Pennarin10-30-05, 03:36 PM | It falls in the same category as the clutch of Orcus spell: the concept sounds awesome but the rendition makes the spell subpar to other spells of its level. |
| Bob the Great10-30-05, 03:51 PM | subpar to other spells of its level. Subpar? SUBPAR? The thing is subpar to detect snares! |
| Pennarin10-30-05, 04:00 PM | Subpar? SUBPAR? The thing is subpar to detect snares! I gather you've experienced the vile factor of this spell for yourself, and discovered its vileness has nothing to do with it being printed in the Book of Vile Darkness ;) |
| cowdragon10-30-05, 05:23 PM | LOL! The Cowdragon :mage: |
| Shatteredtower10-31-05, 03:09 AM | I admit that clutch of Orcus has design problems, despite a pretty good visual, but bestow wound may not be quite so bad, if you consider this: The spell does not state that the damage you heal is equal to the damage you cause. You can read it to imply that you only heal the damage you cause, but it's not a given. It can just as easily be read to state that you heal the damage in exchange for trying to pass it on, whether the injury sticks to someone else or not. Still, that range of touch is still problematic. What good is healing 5 hp from when you're left standing next to a creature likely to hit you for 10 hp or more next round? Even if it does heal regardless of harm done, you probably don't want to use it without spectral hand to deliver it. (Bonus points to someone who can pull this off without undue risk to a familiar.) |
| WombleHunter10-31-05, 09:16 AM | Alternatively, use in on summoned or called creatures. Bonus points if they have Fast Healing. |
| green_yawgmoth10-31-05, 09:26 AM | (Bonus points to someone who can pull this off without undue risk to a familiar.)A familiar with the flyby attack feat? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v91/yawgmoth/kittyjig.gif |
| PlasmaBunny10-31-05, 11:22 AM | Familiar would need Flyby attack and Spring attack, since flyby attack doesn't remove the AoO, it only allows you to fly before and after the attack. Even then, I am unsure whether it would apply to touch spells :(. |
| Wyrd Bearer10-31-05, 12:12 PM | Unfortunately, you'd need a familiar that normally would already have fly-by attack since familiars don't gain any actual HD as their master advances, so they gain no new feats. Still, if its a touch spell, there are plenty of ways to deliver it at a range. Spellstoring (if the spell is still is 3rd level or less like I remember it) reach weapons, archmage's ability to deliver touch spells up to 30 feet away, etc. |
| Missing Minds10-31-05, 01:11 PM | Being as I don't know the spell in question, but from what others have said, it sounds sort of like Vampiric Touch, just at a first level base. So, one word: Torture. Not all spells are meant to be used in battles. |
| Shatteredtower11-01-05, 05:44 AM | Being as I don't know the spell in question, but from what others have said, it sounds sort of like Vampiric Touch, just at a first level base.Sort of, except that it's actual healing, not temporary hit points. So, one word: Torture. Not all spells are meant to be used in battles. Not too much use away from battle, though you may have a point. This might not be a bad post-battle spell for mopping up the fallen. In a sense, it would be a lesser version of death knell. The trouble is that the spell's material component costs nearly as much to cast as it would for your party cleric to brew a potion of cure light wounds. Worse, it's cheaper in the long run to use a wand of cure light wounds than this spell, if all you're using it for is to heal yourself by finishing off helpless enemies. Bonus points to the Womblehunter. Good suggestion. The Flyby Attack idea was close. |
| WombleHunter11-01-05, 07:33 AM | What is that component anyway? |
| Shatteredtower11-01-05, 08:15 AM | That might be copyrighted material. Sorry. :( I can tell you it's a fairly inexpensive gemstone, but not much cheaper than the ingredients for most 1st level potions. |
| cowdragon11-01-05, 08:32 AM | too much for eschew materials...:( The Cowdragon :mage: |
| ronyon11-01-05, 09:50 AM | I never even considered this spell for battle use, except in the way I use Death Knell:slay a bound/subduded animal as a power up before/during battle. We need more spells like this, some of the best are Druid spells!?? I was thinking that a magical bag that sucked out the life force from those placed in it, would be pretty cool.Call it the Hungering Maw Of Something, and give it some spells like: Stupor( to keep the victem helpless) Consumptive Feild G. Consumptive Feild Death Knell Bestow Wound Ability Drain Sheild Other Vampiric Touch Slow Consumption Sadism Imprision Soul Etc Any suggestions to add to that list? Without an item, what is the most necrotic use that you could get out of one living being? |
| cowdragon11-01-05, 07:06 PM | Possibly Necrotic Cyst? It even has the name Necrotic in it. You can do all kinds of yucky things with this as a base spell. Including making undead constructs after killing the victim. The Cowdragon :mage: |
