Where are the high level tactical fly spells?

Overland Flight?

Or, there's always the Polymorph line. Why bother learning to fly when you can turn into something that does it much better than you ever could?

The better flying spells are actually divine. Air Walk, Wind Walk and Cloud Walk.

Ahh, I'd totally forgotten about those. You're right.

EDIT: Can't say I've ever heard of Cloud Walk, though... Got a source for that?

Cloud Walk is in Complete Divine.

Don't forget about 14th caster level Phantom Steeds. They go around 60 MPH with an average fly ability. Cast fly on them and you have the perfect manuverability mount. Except for high-speed turns. The only problem is the limited HP and AC.

If you need to explore a bit, (i.e. don't want to teleport) and don't want to sacrifice a 5th level slot for the slow Overland Flight spell, the 3rd level spell Phantom Steed gives you 240' flight (average) at 14th caster level and above for 1 hour/level.

It's vulnerable to both dispels and damage (HP = 7+CL), so it's not useful in combats at that level (you'll need to have Feather Fall or a contingent fly spell in case the steed vanishes).

However, you'll be hard pressed to find a better overland flight spell (including Overland Flight) in terms of sheer speed and endurance.

If you need combat flight, Fly is still the king of flight spells. If you want fast and maneuverable without sacrificing spellcasting, it's the best. Other than that, Polymorph gets you movement modes, so a Gold Dragon shape can get your a 200' speed as well as all its other fun stuff.

Well that's silly.

There should be improved fly spells.

like fly, greater which gives you 120 speed, perfect move, and lasts 1 round/level. I'd put it at about 5th level? Maybe even one better than this at 7th.

Overland flight isn't tactical. Wind Walk isn't tactical. Air walk isn't quite cool enough (close though). Phantom Steed has too many draw backs.

Why bother learning to fly when you can turn into something that does it much better than you ever could?

Why bother learning how to turn into something that can fly when I can cast a spell that lets me fly better than they ever could?

I would put that first spell at a minimum of 6th level (since I've seen what fly can do in combat) and the other one at 8th level

IMO, it would take a hellacious fly speed (200+, like a dragon) in conjunction with perfect maneuverability to warrent an 8th level spell slot. And it better have a duration that exceeds 1 round per level. For the same level spell I can PaO into an outsider for a week at a time, giving me a great fly speed, good maneuverability, and everything else that goes along with the chosen form.

An 8th level spell that grants nothing but flight better let you fly very well.

@ EvilVegan: I think the spell you proposed would be fine at 5th level even with a duration of 1 min/level.

Here's a combo for you, since you obviously want to focus on flying anyway: Improved Flight feat, Extended Wings of Air, Flight of the Dragon. It requires 2 feats (Improved Flight and Extend Spell), one 3rd level spell slot (Extended Wings of Air), and one 5th level spell slot (Flight of the Dragon, which lasts 1 hour/level). Once you're at higher levels, replace Extended Wings of Air with a Perstistent Wings of Air (8th level spell slot). Don't worry about Flight of the Dragon, it'll last more than long enough. You'll have a fly speed of 100 feet with perfect maneuverability. If you don't want Improved Flight, wait for Greater Wings of Air, which is a 5th level spell. Or there's a magic item that grants its effects....

Thats a way too much for way too little. I don't want to focus on flying, I want a spell that is focused on flying.

I don't know what the spells you're referring to do, but they don't seem to be good enough and they're taking up super-powerful spell slots. 8th level can be used to Polymorph any Object to get a 100 (perfect) fly speeds for way longer amounts of time, it only takes 1 spell and no feats.

A brief description of each spell for you:

Flight of the Dragon: 100 ft (average) for 1 hr/level - 5th level
Wings of Air: Improve Flight Maneuverability by One Step for 1 min/level - 2nd level
Greater Wings of Air: Improve Flight Maneuverability by Two Steps for 1 min/level - 5th level.

All of those spells focus on flying in one way or another.
