From thoughts on the What's a Player to Do forum (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?p=5203959#post5203959)...

Essentially, the Sudden metamagic feats as written seem way too powerful. A 3rd level caster with Sudden Empower can once a day cast a 2nd level spell as a 4th level spell. The once per day restriction isn't overly onerous, considering the caster only gets one-two 2nd level spells anyway. Moreover, the spell to be Empowered can be chosen at casting time!

As a more balanced alternative:
Sudden Empower (metamagic feat)

You can spontaneously convert a higher level spell into an Empowered lower level spell as it is cast.

Prerequisites: Empower Spell

Benefit: You may spontaneously cast an empowered version of a memorized spell in place of a higher level memorized spell, in the same way as a cleric may spontaneously cast an empowered cure or inflict spell. For example, if you have magic missile prepared, you may spontaneously cast an empowered magic missile in place of any 3rd (or higher) level spell. Both spells are lost as if cast.

Special: The Sudden Empowered cast spell must be able to be prepared in the spell slot used to cast it. A cleric may not Sudden Empower a regular spell in a domain slot, nor a domain spell in a regular slot. A multiclass wizard / cleric may not Sudden Empower a wizard spell in a cleric slot, or vice versa. A specialist wizard may not Sudden Empower a spell from a non-specialist school in a specialist school slot, but may Sudden Empower a spell from a specialist school in a normal slot.

Alternative version:
Sudden Empower (metamagic feat)

You can Empower spontaneous spells without increasing casting time, and can spontaneously convert a memorized higher level spell into an Empowered lower level spell as it is cast.

Prerequisites: Empower Spell

Benefit: If you can cast spells spontaneously, you may Empower a spontaneously cast spell without increasing the casting time.

If you memorize spells, you may spontaneously cast an empowered version of a memorized spell in place of a higher level memorized spell. For example, if you have magic missile prepared, you may spontaneously cast an empowered magic missile in place of any 3rd (or higher) level spell. Both spells are lost as if cast.

Unlike normal spontaneous casting, using Sudden Empower on a memorized spell does not increase the casting time.

This version gives benefit to both normal and spontaneous spells, which is useful for clerics, druids, and multiclass spontanteous casters.

The sudden feats are powergamey crap. The ability to maximize a spell, even at once a day, before you could actually ever even use the maximize spell feat itself is crap.

I'm not asking for comment on whether the Sudden metamagic feats are broken, I'm asking for comment on whether either alternative presented above is a good replacement, or whether you can suggest a better.
