| Kydd04-19-04, 02:26 AM | Our group found this black book with a buckle. It's all black, and we don't have a key. We can't ask the wizards (whose library we are planning to search) what it is, because they may attempt to kill us and we're only at level 2. Anyone have any idea what it may be? (I'm just trying to avoid any permanent, unfixable handicaps here) |
| rogue_lettuce04-19-04, 02:43 AM | Anything. It could be anything in the world. Just remember that the DM can change the description of any magic item, so it could be the book equivalent of a deck of many things, or it could just be a wizard's spellbook.... Sorry. |
| Dracoulis The Phyrexian04-19-04, 03:02 AM | You know, you'll probably have more fun figuring this out in character, y'know. |
| Boondoggle04-19-04, 03:34 AM | What's that cursed book called that eats people's souls? |
| smrtgmp04-19-04, 03:43 AM | Its the buckled black book, if I'm not mistaken. |
| Seeker9504-19-04, 09:50 AM | Be careful. It is evil (all black books are evil). It is pure evil. Just make sure you do not put it into a toaster oven and then touch it. |
| Edymnion04-19-04, 10:43 AM | It could be the wizard's spellbook. It could be a manual for golem creation. It could be the wizard's diary. It could be the new novel the wizard is writing in his spare to thats going to make the Faerun Best Seller list. Aka, it could be anything your DM wants it to be. This isn't a video game where everything looks the same to everybody and you can just jump on the internet and have people tell you how to beat the game. You have to play it yourself, and you have to find things out for yourself. Absolutely anything we say can be changed in a wave of the hand by the DM, so our answers are meaningless. However, from the limited description you gave, and the location you're in, I'd wager its one of his spellbooks. Go ahead, open it up and read all the pages. It should be fine... *grabs some popcorn and sits back to watch the light show* |
| phizuol04-19-04, 11:11 AM | If its the new Harry Potter book you can't open it till the release date. I'm sure those wizards probably would kill you in order to get their hands on it. |
| Pathanus04-19-04, 12:29 PM | Edyminion is right, it could be anything including a blank spell book. I would definitely cast Detect Magic and Detect Evil on it. If those turn up some clues like Necromantic Strong and Overpoweredly (or whatever it is) Evil, give the book to the nearest Lawful Good deity church so they can destroy it. Personally I would cast said spells above and then wait until I was higher level and open it, just incase it is trapped with any trap spells. You could always get a scroll of Knock and cast it on the book from a distance and see what happens. Just don't read it if it radiates evil! Path |

| Sproik04-19-04, 03:53 PM | It's an unabridged copy of the Book of Eibon, Hyperborean edition. You should read it immediately. |
| Vorpal Warhammer04-19-04, 04:02 PM | It's definitely a Buckley Book of Blackness +1. |
| Zherog04-19-04, 04:23 PM | Originally posted by Vorpal Warhammer It's definitely a Buckley Book of Blackness +1. I think you are way wrong, Vorpal. It's a Blacky book of Buckleness, but there's not way to determine the modifier without unlocking it. :D :D :D |

I guess it could be a Blacky Book of Buckleness, if your DM is going to allow that Munchkin Manual in his campaign. I just assumed it was +1 because that's the only Buckley Book of Blackness modifier that fits in the acceptable treasure table for 2nd level characters. If it's a higher plus, the DM is severely skewing the character wealth by level ratio. ;) |

| Boondoggle04-19-04, 06:07 PM | ...who needs black books of buckliness? |
| Dymo04-23-04, 02:52 PM | Originally posted by Boondoggle ...who needs black books of buckliness? People with the last name Buckley, perhaps. :D |
| Vanigo04-23-04, 04:11 PM | No, no, no, the black book of buckliness has two buckles. It's either a broken black book of buckliness, in which case, being broken, it won't do anything, or it's a red book of buckliness that's been painted black, in which case it doesn't matter what you do, since you're already dead. Open away. |

It's called 'Black Books' and you could try and get hold of the DVD of the 1st or second series. |
| Iron Chef Vastrox04-25-04, 06:59 PM | It sounds really exotic, so it's probably Das schwarze Buch mit einer Schnalle. If it's from Thay, it could also be черный список с застежкой. The only way to know for sure is to lick it. Does it taste like Kuchen or borscht? |
| Arcuna04-25-04, 07:23 PM | Okay. Well the way I see it, it is one (or more) of three things. 1: The final piece of the puzzle to destroying the universe 2: A quest item that only has short term importance 3: Something that your DM put in to make you fear it. (It's the buckle...without it, the book is nothing) |
| barnaby3604-25-04, 07:45 PM | It is so obviously the artifact known as the "Ssenilkcub fo Koob Kclab", which is so powerful and mystical that the Resolasiddyk clan found it and tried to read its contents. This unholy enlightenment destroyed the readers, their children, their children's children and all of the flowers in their garden, forever making Modresol a desolate wasteland. Trust me, read it. Everyone who is cool has. I love the language of Drawkcab. barnaby36 aka 63ybanrab |
