3.5 changed the old darkness spell, but I wanted a spell to produce the old effects but with a shorter duration.

The spell is below, what 3.5 level should it be?

Black Light
Evocation [Darkness]
Level: ????
Components: V, DF
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: Touch
Target: Object touched
Duration: 1 minute/level (D)
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: No
This spell causes an object to radiate darkness out to a 20-foot radius. Not even creatures that can normally see in the dark can see in an area shrouded in magical darkness. Normal lights do not work, nor do light spells of a lower level. The effects of Black Light and the 3rd-level spell daylight cancel each other, leaving whatever light conditions normally prevail in the overlapping areas of the spells.
If the spell is cast on a small object that is then placed inside or under a lightproof covering, the spell’s effects are blocked until the covering is removed.
Black Light counterspells or dispels any light spell of equal or lower level.

I figured second considering its shorter duration, but allowed it to counter daylight because it is mor intense than the current light or darkness spells.

It's somewhere between 2nd and 3rd. I'd go with 3rd, since Darklight is 3rd, has a Duration in Rounds and lets you see in it normally.
They seem about even, with Darklight winning slightly, in my book (unless you have Devil's Sight or the like).

There's already a spell called blacklight in the SC. It's rounds per level and the caster can see in it as the darklight 3.0 spell. It's 3rd level.

Yeah, that was the one I was referring to. Sorry for the confusion. :embarrass

I might make this one Rounds just to keep it at a lower level.. or the unconventional "One Minute" duration. The range is already reduced and you don't get to see through it.

Would SC ebon eyes let you see through SC blacklight?

Is Devil's Sight in Savage Species?

It is not in the Spell Compendium.

It's in the SRD. (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/divine/spells/blacklight.htm)
Blacklight
Evocation [Darkness]
Level: Darkness 3, Sor/Wiz 3
Components: V, S, M
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Area: A 20-ft.-radius emanation centered on a creature, object, or point in space
Duration: 1 round/level (D)
Saving Throw: Will negates or none (object)
Spell Resistance: Yes or no (object)

The caster creates an area of total darkness. The darkness is impenetrable to normal vision and darkvision, but the caster can see normally within the blacklit area. Creatures outside the spell’s area, even the caster, cannot see through it.

The spell can be cast on a point in space, but the effect is stationary when cast on a mobile object. A character can cast the spell on a creature, and the effect then radiates from the creature and moves as it moves. Unattended objects and points in space do not get saving throws or benefit from spell resistance.

Blacklight counters or dispels any light spell of equal or lower level. The 3rd-level cleric spell daylight counters or dispels blacklight.

Devil's Sight is a Warlock Invocation.
Ebon Eyes mimics a part of it.
